Infant sleep safety recommendations have certainly changed since I was a parent of a newborn! Bumpers -- out, stuffed animals -- out, fluffy blankets -- out! I'm referring to "out of the crib." These items, once regularly placed in a crib, should not be near a newborn. As a member of the NYC Child Fatality Review Team (CFRT), I spent the last year reviewing the data on infant injury death. Then, the CFRT developed recommendations for preventing sleep-related injury deaths among infants under the age of one.
Sleep-related infant deaths are caused by both injury (unintentional suffocation in bed and undetermined causes) and by Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Between 2004 and 2008 there were 325 injury-related deaths among NYC infants. Of these, 252 were related to unsafe sleeping conditions and environments. It's a leading cause of death among NYC infants. There are ways to prevent this tragedy from occurring.
Here are some of the CFRT 2011 recommendations for Safe Sleep for Infants.
To read the entire CFRT 2011 report or to learn more about keeping your child safe at home, visit The NYSPCC's website, www.nyspcc.org. We?re checking in with teams as they hit their bye week. ?Or at least we are trying to.
Next up: The Chicago Bears.
Familiar position
Lovie Smith told everyone to calm down after the team?s loss to the Lions on Monday Night Football in Week 5. ?He pointed out that if the team could beat the Vikings and Bucs, they would be 4-3 just like last year at the bye.
Give Smith credit: That?s exactly what happened. ?After a?tumultuous?training camp and start to the season, the Bears are in decent enough shape.
The Bears season has a different feel to it after two strong efforts. They completely destroyed Minnesota, and controlled the action against the Bucs in London.
The Bears have proven capable of beating mediocre competition. They can?t beat the best NFC teams: The Packers, Saints, and Lions all have wins over Chicago.
Forte leads the way
Adrian Peterson is the best running back in the NFL. ?Matt Forte may be the most important to his team. ?Forte leads all players by a wide margin in yards from scrimmage with 1,091. ?He is just off Chris Johnson?s all time yards from scrimmage record pace.
It?s hard to overstate how good Forte is as a receiver. He has a shot to be the first running back since Marshall Faulk to put up over 1,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards in the same season. It?s no coincidence Mike Martz was involved in both seasons.
Improving passing game
Jay Cutler may have enjoyed the best two game stretch of his Bears career in the loss to the Lions and the win over the Vikings. He is looking more comfortable. His pass protection has improved from absymal to simply lame.
The offense still has to be more consistent after some early ugly outings, but it?s headed in the right direction. It?s 12th in scoring despite the 21 sacks Cutler has taken. The team has a +4 turover margin.
Safety dance
Chris Harris started the season at strong safety; he was released Thursday. Brandon Meriweather was signed for $3.25 million and now sits on the bench. The team is going young with Major Wright and Chris Conte at the position. ?This is a shaky secondary overall.
Average defense
Lovie Smith teams are supposed to be built on defense. At this stage, the Bears have been ordinary stopping opponents. Lance Briggs and Brian Urlacher are still playing at a high level, but they don?t get a lot of help. The defensive line has been decent. Julius Peppers has played at less than 100%.
Chicago?s only chance to make a postseason push is for the defense to improve dramatically.
Angling for a wild card
The Bears are three games back in the NFC North, so their only hope for a playoff spot is a wild card. They are in decent shape with wins over NFC contenders like Atlanta and Tampa Bay.
The next two weeks after the bye are huge. ?The Bears travel to Philadelphia before hosting Detroit. Sweeping those two games would put Chicago in terrific position before an oddly timed four-game tour through the AFC West.
After seven weeks, the Bears are in the mix. Their recent play indicates we?ll probably be talking about Bears tiebreakers come late December.

ScienceDaily (Oct. 27, 2011) ? The mere presence of a predator causes enough stress to kill a dragonfly, even when the predator cannot actually get at its prey to eat it, say biologists at the University of Toronto.
"How prey respond to the fear of being eaten is an important topic in ecology, and we've learned a great deal about how these responses affect predator and prey interactions," says Professor Locke Rowe, chair of the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (EEB) and co-principal investigator of a study conducted at U of T's Koffler Scientific Reserve.
"As we learn more about how animals respond to stressful conditions -- whether it's the presence of predators or stresses from other natural or human-caused disruptions -- we increasingly find that stress brings a greater risk of death, presumably from things such as infections that normally wouldn't kill them," says Rowe.
Shannon McCauley, a post-doctoral fellow, and EEB professors Marie-Jos?e Fortin and Rowe raised juvenile dragonfly larvae (Leucorrhinia intacta) in aquariums or tanks along with their predators. The two groups were separated so that while the dragonflies could see and smell their predators, the predators could not actually eat them.
"What we found was unexpected -- more of the dragonflies died when predators shared their habitat," says Rowe. Larvae exposed to predatory fish or aquatic insects had survival rates 2.5 to 4.3 times less than those not exposed.
In a second experiment, 11 per cent of larvae exposed to fish died as they attempted to metamorphose into their adult stage, compared to only two per cent of those growing in a fish-free environment. "We allowed the juvenile dragonflies to go through metamorphosis to become adult dragonflies, and found those that had grown up around predators were more likely to fail to complete metamorphosis successfully, more often dying in the process," says Rowe.
The scientists suggest that their findings could apply to all organisms facing any amount of stress, and that the experiment could be used as a model for future studies on the lethal effects of stress.
The research is described in a paper titled "The deadly effects of 'nonlethal' predators," published in Ecology and highlighted in Nature this week. It was supported by grants to Fortin and Rowe from the Canada Research Chairs program and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, and a post-doctoral fellowship awarded to McCauley.

The House Science Committee held a hearing about the commercial crew initiative in which NASA proposes to finance the development of private space taxis to take astronauts to and from low Earth orbit.
The program encountered a great deal of skepticism from most members of the committee, with the exception, as always, of Rep. Dana Rohrabacher.
Why do the congressmen have a problem with the Commercial Crew program?
As suggested by Chairman Ralph Hall's opening statement, most of the members of the committee are deeply skeptical that the participants in the commercial crew program are going to develop private markets for their vehicles in the near future. This would mean that the federal government would be in the position of financing a "commercial space sector" whose sole purpose would be to service government contracts. Lack of private markets may lead to a government bailout of commercial space companies.
But what about reliance on the Russia Soyuz?
The members of the committee are not very happy with that, for political and other reasons. However when one calculates that $6 billion price tag it will take to develop the commercial space ships, it might actually be cheaper to stick with the Russians, despite the confiscatory prices they are charging.
How did the witnesses from the commercial space companies respond to the criticisms?
Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX, offered his personal guarantee that the government would not have to bail out his company. Musk also claimed that he can charge per seat about a third of what Russia is now charging. In his statement, Musk also claimed significant improvements in flight safety for his Dragon space ship compared to the Russian Soyuz. Representatives of other companies such as Boeing, Sierra Nevada Space Systems, ATK Space Launch Systems and United Launch Alliance claimed that their businesses would be successful even if NASA were the sole customer.
But there is some thought to developing private markets, right?
Satellite servicing, cargo hauling, and taking paying customers on rides to low Earth orbit were mentioned. These potential markets did not seem to be firm, but rather in the form of "forward looking statements."
When would the commercial space ships be available?
All of the commercial witnesses claimed that their spacecraft would be ready to fly in advance of the official NASA date of 2017. Musk, for example, said that the Dragon could be ready to take astronauts in 2014, given adequate funding.
Will there be adequate funding?
That, as always, is the $6 billion question. Commercial space is competing with the space exploration program and the James Webb Space Telescope for funding. Musk is saying that he has invested $500 million of his own money in his space venture. If Congress falls short of projected funding, could the private players take up the slack to keep the commercial space ship projects on schedule? Past experience, as with the 1990s era Delta Clipper project, suggests not. But time will only tell.
Mark R. Whittington is the author of Children of Apollo and The Last Moonwalker. He has written on space subjects for a variety of periodicals, including The Houston Chronicle, The Washington Post, USA Today, the L.A. Times and The Weekly Standard.

Can Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi possibly be considered a role model?
All depends on which parts of that name you want to focus on.
The Jersey Shore star says she draws a line between her guidette alter ego and the person she actually is ... which is basically the same as her alter ego.
Whatever name she uses, she still does these things. That is all.
Oh well. "I think you see more of the party side of me ... on the show, but right now, you're talking to Nicole," the train wreck told Today's Matt Lauer.
She admits the tanning addict, club-going, makeout queen we see on MTV is not a role model, but "the soft, calm, business-ready person” Nicole Polizzi is.
Call her what you want, she looks awfully tan in real life. Just saying.
"Snooki's definitely not a role model. Snooki's just there to have fun in life," she shared. "Nicole, I would say, I can be a role model. I have a strong personality."
"I'm very strong, independent and I'm loveable, I guess," she said while promoting her book Confessions of a Guidette, which tells you all you need to know.

Technology helps scientists understand how the dead once lived
Web edition : 12:39 pm
One afternoon, Ron Beckett, a professor at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Conn., left his lab, taking some research home with him. The university labs were being remodeled, and security was a question. Carefully assisting his elderly passenger into the back seat, Beckett buckled her in for safety. As the two traveled to Beckett?s home, the passenger sat very still and didn?t make conversation ? because she?s a 1,000-year-old Peruvian mummy!
Mummies are alive with information, and scientists like Beckett are helping to unlock what these time travelers have to say. Cutting-edge technology such as CT, or CAT, scans and endoscopes are allowing scientists to see not just what?s underneath the wrappings but also what?s inside a mummy?s body.

Can?t help but think that Joe Torre and the powers that be made the easy ? and the correct ? call in postponing Game 6. Why risk having delays knock out Colby Lewis and Jaime Garcia? Why risk the annoyance? Why risk the broadcast going on until 1AM? ?Especially when Thursday and Friday look to be so swell.
Here?s some of what Torre had to say a few minutes ago regarding the game being postponed, starting with a description of how the meeting in which it was decided went:
?Basically a conversation. ?Do you want to?play?in?the?rain? ???You get to a Game 6 in the World Series, you want to guard, as long as you have forecast for clear weather tommorrow and the next day, that was more a decision-maker than anything else ? If it doesn?t rain, you still made a decision on what you knew.?
I see about zero downside to this, apart from trying to figure out what I?ll do with myself tonight now. ?A good decision by Major League Baseball.

The Grammy Awards may be months away, but the Recording Academy is already gearing up for the big show. Lady Gaga has been tapped to perform at "The Grammy Nominations Concert Live!! — Countdown to Music's Biggest Night," airing next month. She'll be joined by country star Jason Aldean, who will also perform at the fourth annual event.
The show, which takes place November 30 at the Nokia Theatre in L.A., will once again be hosted by LL Cool J. It will air on CBS at 10 p.m. In addition to performances from Aldean, Gaga and others who have yet to be announced, nominees in several of the categories will be announced at the show. The Grammys air live on February 12.
This certainly isn't Gaga's first time at the Grammy rodeo. She's won five awards in the past, including trophies for Best Short Form Music Video and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for "Bad Romance," as well as Best Pop Vocal Album for The Fame Monster, Best Dance Recording for "Poker Face" and Best Electronic/Dance Album for her debut album, The Fame.
Last year, Gaga made headlines when she appeared on the red carpet in an egg and emerged in yolk-colored clothes to perform "Born This Way." She previously performed with Elton John in 2010.
Aldean has not previously been nominated for any Grammy Awards. While nominees for the show will be announced that night, it should be noted that both Gaga and Aldean are eligible. They both released albums within the timeframe: Gaga with Born This Way and Aldean with My Kinda Party.
Who are you rooting for at this year's Grammys? Let us know in the comments!

BEIJING (Reuters) ? China's vast manufacturing sector expanded moderately in October to snap three months of contraction, reflecting the resilience of robust domestic demand that is likely to soothe fears of an abrupt slowdown in the world's second-largest economy.
HSBC's flash purchasing managers' index (PMI) also showed price pressures eased in China, underlining consumer price data that has shown a slight pullback in inflation from three-year peaks.
The flash PMI, designed to give an early snapshot of the month's factory activity, rose to 51.1 in October from September's final reading of 49.9 as new orders and new export orders expanded.
The reading surpassed the 50-point level demarcating expansion from contraction for the first time since June, when the PMI was 51.6.
"Thanks to the pick-up in new orders and output, the headline flash PMI rebounded back into expansionary territory during October, marking a steady start to manufacturing activities in the four quarter," said Qu Hongbin, China economist at HSBC.
"Meanwhile, inflation components within the PMI results confirmed stable output prices growth and slower input price inflation. All these data confirm our view that there is no risk of a hard landing in China," he said.
Qu expects annual industrial output growth to hover around 13 percent in October and the central bank to keep monetary policy stable in the coming months.
Both new orders and new export orders sub-indexes rose above the 50-point mark in October. Given the gloomy global outlook, however, it is too early to determine if the rebound in export orders can be sustained.
Still, the data provided support to financial markets, which were already firm on hopes that euro zone leaders were moving closer to stemming the debt crisis. Hong Kong stocks were up 4 percent.
China is vulnerable to fading demand from the United States and Europe, its two biggest export markets. China's trade surplus narrowed in September for the second straight month and annual exports growth to the European Union more than halved compared with August.
But robust domestic demand -- consumption and investment -- and solid export growth to emerging markets have provided some protection.
The worst for China's economy and the rest of the world could come if Europe fails to contain the sovereign debt crisis, said George Worthington, chief economist for the Asia Pacific at IFR Markets, a Thomson Reuters unit.
"But domestic demand conditions seem solid and enough to keep the economy growing by around 9 percent, judging from the rebound in the PMI from a low of 49.3 back in July," he said.
GRADUAL SLOWDOWN
China's annual economic growth slowed to 9.1 percent in the third quarter from 9.5 percent in the second quarter and 9.7 percent in the first.
Growth is expected to slow further. A Reuters poll showed analysts expect growth to weaken to 8.6 percent in 2012 from 9.3 percent this year.
Most analysts believe data points to an economic soft landing, rather than a crash for China. Many define a hard landing as a sudden dip in quarterly GDP growth below 8 percent, which they say could drive up unemployment.
However, the government has announced some measures to support the economy. In comments published on Sunday, Premier Wen Jiabao said the government will make job creation a more urgent priority.
Many of the country's small firms are breathing easier since the government took steps to expand financing support to small firms, said Zhu Jianfang, chief economist at CITIC Securities.
In addition, the central bank appears to be slowing down the appreciation of the yuan, partly to help Chinese exporters.
NO IMMINENT POLICY SHIFT SEEN
The HSBC data showed factory price pressures eased in October, offering some comfort to Chinese policymakers who have been trying to bring inflation under control.
The input price sub-index fell to 54.3 in October from 58.8 in September.
Annual consumer inflation eased to 6.1 percent in September, retreating further from three-year highs, although stubborn food price pressures will keep the central bank guarded about loosening policy prematurely.
Inflation could ease further in coming months but the full-year rate is almost certain to overshoot the government's 4 percent target.
The central bank has raised interest rates five times and lifted banks' reserve requirements nine times since last October. It last raised interest rates in July.
"We may have to wait until the end of the year to see a relaxation of monetary policy, although there could be some structural policy fine-tuning before that," Zhu said.

WASHINGTON?? Will Ferrell, who refined his impersonation of President George W. Bush on the sketch comedy show "Saturday Night Live" and later took his presidential act to Broadway, was awarded the nation's top humor prize Sunday night.
The TV star went on to make movies and co-found the popular website FunnyorDie.com in a career that won the 44-year-old the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor from the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
Slideshow: Will Ferrell?s wonderful world (on this page)It was the Bush impression, though, that might have made the Washington crowd laugh ? and cringe ? the hardest Sunday.
As trilogy hits Blu-ray, we remember five great moments from the 1993 dinosaur classic. Alas, poor Nedry and random lawyer guy on the toilet, it wasn't that nice knowing you.
"Washington is not a city much known for its comedy ? at least not the intentional kind," said PBS news anchor Gwen Ifill, who mentored Ferrell on his journalistic skills for the movie "Anchorman."
Story: Movie brotherly love has its ups and downsShe introduced a clip of Ferrell playing Bush in "You're Welcome, America: A Final Night with George W. Bush" on Broadway. Dressed in a flight suit under a banner that read "Mission Accomplished" in a mock Oval Office he explained how Morocco had sent a special unit of 2,000 trained monkeys to fight terrorism "and make children laugh."
With that kind of comedy, Ferrell had accomplished something amazing, Ifill said.
"He got Democrats to pay and see and applaud George W. Bush," she said.
Conan O'Brien, Jack Black, Matthew Broderick, Ben Stiller and Billie Joe Armstrong from the rock band Green Day performed Sunday in Ferrell's honor, joined by Molly Shannon, Tim Meadows and Andy Samberg from Ferrell's "SNL" days.
Story: What happens when Smurfs meet the stars? The show was taped for broadcast Oct. 31 on PBS stations nationwide.
Black opened the show with a song-and-dance routine for his friend and tried to lead the crowd in chanting "Will, Will, Will, will rock you."
"Will Ferrell, did you notice how I changed it from 'We Will Rock You?'" he said.
"It's about time he got some official Washington, D.C., props," Black said, noting that Ferrell had "reigned supreme" on "SNL" for seven years. "He's crazy funny. He makes you laugh so hard you cry and pee simultaneously."
O'Brien saluted Ferrell for giving so much of himself to his comedy. He said Ferrell had his sides physically softened and his "buttocks lowered with magnets" to prepare his body for spandex routines and at times streaking naked.
Story: James Spader in talks to be the new 'Office' boss"Will magnifies and celebrates his flaws, just to entertain us," O'Brien said.
O'Brien also thanked Ferrell for being his first guest and his last guest when he was host of NBC's "Tonight Show."
"It's a rare friend who's going to stick with you for five-and-a-half months," he said.
Shannon, who met Ferrell while she was a waitress in Los Angeles, said that contrary to his TV persona, Ferrell is very serious and sweet to work with. As for the award, she joked "Will's agents and manager clearly bought this for him."
Story: Party on! The five best wild guys in filmSome of Ferrell's famous sketches from "SNL" were played on the big screen, including his "Cow Bell" routine with Christopher Walken and "Craig the Spartan Cheerleader."
When he was finally awarded the prize, a bronze bust of Twain, Ferrell promptly dropped it on stage and tried to pick up the broken pieces. He joked that he had turned the prize down 13 times before but decided to accept this time because of the prize money (there isn't any) and to be watched on PBS "by hundreds of people across this country."
He thanked the Kennedy Center as "one of the few places that uphold comedy as what it truly is, an art form."
Ferrell is the son of a teacher and Roy Lee Ferrell, a guitarist for the Righteous Brothers. He grew up in Irvine, California, went to college at the University of Southern California and got his start in comedy with the Los Angeles improv group, The Groundlings.
That's where he was discovered by "SNL."
Ferrell went on to make some outlandish movies including "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy," "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby" and "Old School." He has also tried his hand at drama, including this year's independent film "Everything Must Go." One of his upcoming projects is a Spanish-language comedy, "Casa de Mi Padre."
Ferrell told The Associated Press he has tried different avenues as movie studio budgets tightened. He opted for projects with smaller budgets but more creative freedom.
Longtime collaborator Adam McKay and Ferrell also took their comedy to the Internet with the 2007 creation of the popular video website FunnyorDie.com. Since then, it has drawn an audience of millions for its original Web programming.
McKay, a former head writer on "SNL," said it was Ferrell's "Cow Bell" sketch that has always made him laugh the hardest.
Before the show, Ferrell said playing the Bush character is one of his favorite memories for its political laughs, especially when he took the character to Broadway.
"We hit it at the perfect time when people wanted some sort of comedy after the eight years we just went through," he said.
Thirteen other people have won the Mark Twain Prize since 1998, including Tina Fey, Bill Cosby, Steve Martin and Whoopi Goldberg. It recognizes people who have followed the tradition of Samuel Clemens, the writer known as Mark Twain who used social commentary and satire to have an impact on society.

ERCIS, Turkey (Reuters) ? Tens of thousands of people spent a second night under canvas, in cars or huddled round small fires in towns rattled by aftershocks from a massive earthquake in eastern Turkey that killed hundreds.
By late Monday the death toll from Sunday's quake had crept up to 279, but hundreds more were still missing.
Casualties were concentrated in the town of Ercis and the provincial capital Van, with officials still checking and confirming fatalities in outlying villages.
"It was like the judgment day," said Mesut Ozan Yilmaz, 18, who survived for 32 hours under the rubble of a tea house where he had been passing time with friends.
Unhurt, but lying on a hospital bed under a thick blanket, his face still blackened by dust and dirt, Yilmaz gave a chilling account to CNN Turk news channel of how he survived by diving under the table.
"The space we had was so narrow. People were fighting for more space to survive," Yilmaz said. "I rested my head on a dead man's foot. I know I would be dead now if I had let myself go psychologically."
As grieving families prepared Tuesday to bury their dead, others kept vigil by the mounds of concrete rubble and masonry, praying rescue teams would find missing loved ones alive.
Rescue teams concentrated efforts in Ercis, a town of 100,000 that was worst hit by the 7.2 magnitude tremor.
NOT ENOUGH TENTS
The Turkish Red Crescent distributed up to 13,000 tents, and was preparing to provide temporary shelter for around 40,000 people, although there were no reliable estimates of the number of people left destitute.
The relief agency was criticized for failing to ensure that some of the most needy, particularly in villages, received tents as temperatures plummeted overnight.
"We were sent 25 tents for 150 homes. Everybody is waiting outside, we've got small children, we've got nothing left," Ahmet Arikes, the 60-year-old headman of Amik, a village outside Van that was reduced to rubble.
Television images showed desperate men pushing roughly to grab tents from the back of a Red Crescent truck.
"I didn't think the Red Crescent was successful enough in giving away tents. There is a problem on that matter," Huseyin Celik, deputy chairman of the ruling AK Party, told the CNN Turk news channel. "I apologize to our people."
Soon after, the relief agency's chairman told the news channel that 12,000 more tents would be delivered to Van on Tuesday. Deputy Prime Minister Besir Atalay, overseeing relief operations in Van, promised: "From today there will be nothing our people lack."
GHOST TOWN
Whatever the shortcomings of the relief operation, the disaster posed little risk to Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan who secured a third consecutive term with a strong majority at a national election in June.
The trauma of quake is one more curse to bear for Kurds, the dominant ethnic group in southeast Turkey, where a three-decade-long separatist insurgency has stolen the lives of more than 40,000 people.
"We escaped from terrorism but now we are faced with an earthquake," said Osman Bayram, a 26-year-old teacher, who had move to Van from a more restive part of the southeast.
The center or Van, a city of 1 million people, resembled a ghost town with no lights in the streets or buildings, and hardly any people in the street.
The sense of dislocation was greater in Ercis. With no homes to return to, thousands of people, mostly men, paced the streets, stopping to look at the destruction or whenever there was some commotion at a rescue operation site.
At one collapsed building on the main road leading through Ercis, the area worst hit in Sunday's quake, exhausted rescue workers shouted at crowds of men pushing forward to catch a glimpse as workers tried to free the corpse of a dead woman from the rubble.
"Get back! Are you not human? Show some respect! Do we not have any honor or pride?" one rescue worker yelled out.
Aftershocks, some powerful, continued to rock the town, causing brief panic on the streets as people jump to their feet to find an open space, scared a building might collapse on them.
The groaning of flexing glass in shop front windows could be heard as the aftershocks struck. In one deserted shop, wooden crates filled with lemons and pomegranates sat stacked in display behind the broken glass.

NEW YORK ? A U.S. citizen who holds an Iranian passport pleaded not guilty Monday to charges that he plotted to assassinate the Saudi ambassador to the United States.
Manssor Arbabsiar, 56, standing in his navy blue prison uniform, entered the plea in U.S. District Court in Manhattan to a five-count indictment returned last week.
Those charges were the same as those contained in an Oct. 11 criminal complaint. According to the complaint, Arbabsiar has admitted his role in a $1.5 million plot to kill the ambassador at a restaurant by setting off explosives.
President Barack Obama's administration has accused agents of the Iranian government of being involved in the plot. The press attache at Iran's mission to the United Nations has called the accusation "baseless."
No trial date has been set. U.S. District judge John F. Keenan set Dec. 21 for Arbabsiar's next court appearance, saying the weeks until then would give prosecutors sufficient time to turn over evidence in the case and for the defense to prepare a likely challenge to whether the government gave Arbabsiar adequate warning of his legal rights before questioning him.
Arbabsiar's lawyer, Sabrina Shroff, declined to comment after Monday's proceeding, which lasted only several minutes.
Arbabsiar was arrested Sept. 29 at John F. Kennedy International Airport on charges that carry a potential life sentence. He was held without bail.
U.S. authorities say they secretly recorded conversations between Arbabsiar and an informant with the Drug Enforcement Administration after Arbabsiar approached the informant in Mexico and asked his knowledge of explosives for a plot to blow up the Saudi embassy in Washington. They said Arbabsiar later offered $1.5 million for the death of the ambassador.
Authorities said Arbabsiar eventually made a $100,000 down payment wired from an overseas account for a plot that would kill the ambassador at his favorite restaurant.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? President Barack Obama this week will announce a series of actions to help the economy that will not require congressional approval, including an initiative to make it easier for homeowners to refinance their mortgages, according to a White House official.
The actions come as Obama is facing resistance from Republicans to a $447 billion jobs package he has urged Congress to pass.
The first of the initiatives will be unveiled during Obama's three-day trip to western states beginning Monday.
He will discuss the changes in mortgage rules at a stop in Nevada, which has one of the hardest-hit housing markets in the country.
The Obama administration has been working with the Federal Housing Finance Agency, the regulator for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, to find ways to make it easier for borrowers to switch to cheaper loans even if they have little to no equity in their homes.
The FHFA intends to loosen the terms of the two-year-old Home Affordable Refinance Program (HARP), which helps borrowers who have been making mortgage payments on time but who have not been able to refinance as their home values have dropped.
The Wall Street Journal reported that the changes should boost refinancing because they will let banks avoid the risk of any "buy-back" on a HARP mortgage as long as borrowers have made their last six mortgage payments and they prove that they have a job or another source of passive income.
They are also set to reduce loan fees that Fannie and Freddie charge and waive fees on borrowers that refinance into loans with shorter terms, the Journal said.
Pricing details won't be published until mid-November, and lenders could begin refinancing loans under the retooled program as soon as December 1, the newspaper reported, citing federal officials. Loans that exceed the current limit of 125 percent of the property's value won't be able to participate until early next year, the report said.
In Denver Wednesday, Obama will announce a student loan initiative.
"The only way we can truly attack our economic challenges is with bold, bipartisan action in Congress," White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer told The New York Times.
"The president will continue to pressure Congressional Republicans to put country before party and pass the American Jobs Act, but he believes we cannot wait, so he will act where they won't."

?The human genome was sequenced, and in the process of moving that forward the technology that was developed was incredible. And because of their efforts in the human genome, that technology is available to folks like us.?
Northern Arizona University?s Paul Keim at the ScienceWriters2011 conference. The ability to compare genomes is a powerful tool for identifying the origins of a natural disease outbreak or bioterrorism. Keim?s team examined the anthrax mailed to victims in the 2001 attacks and determined that it did not come from Iraq.
?The govt really wanted to figure out what was going on there. Half a million dollars to sequence a genome, no problem, go do it. Go do it 20 times if you want. And so we had access to this technology. And so we were able to push the limits of what could be done in this area of molecular identification of pathogens at a very early stage. Ten years ago. Now we?re doing it on everything. Because the cost of this technology has plunged. We can sequence a genome of a bacterium for somewhere between $10 and $100.?

MUMBAI, India (AP) ? More than 200 Indian girls whose names mean "unwanted" in Hindi have chosen new names for a fresh start in life.
A central Indian district held a renaming ceremony Saturday that it hopes will give the girls new dignity and help fight widespread gender discrimination that gives India a skewed gender ratio, with far more boys than girls.
The 285 girls ? wearing their best outfits with barrettes, braids and bows in their hair ? lined up to receive certificates with their new names along with small flower bouquets from Satara district officials in Maharashtra state.
In shedding names like "Nakusa" or "Nakushi," which mean "unwanted" in Hindi, some girls chose to name themselves after Bollywood stars such as "Aishwarya" or Hindu goddesses like "Savitri." Some just wanted traditional names with happier meanings, such as "Vaishali," or "prosperous, beautiful and good."
"Now in school, my classmates and friends will be calling me this new name, and that makes me very happy," said a 15-year-old girl who had been named Nakusa by a grandfather disappointed by her birth. She chose the new name "Ashmita," which means "very tough" or "rock hard" in Hindi.
The plight of girls in India came to a focus after this year's census showed the nation's sex ratio had dropped over the past decade from 927 girls for every 1,000 boys under the age of 6 to 914.
Maharashtra state's ratio is well below that, with just 883 girls for every 1,000 boys ? down from 913 a decade ago. In the district of Satara, it is even lower, at 881.
Such ratios are the result of abortions of female fetuses, or just sheer neglect leading to a higher death rate among girls. The problem is so serious in India that hospitals are legally banned from revealing the gender of an unborn fetus in order to prevent sex-selective abortions, though evidence suggests the information gets out.
Part of the reason Indians favor sons is the enormous expense of marrying off girls. Families often go into debt arranging marriages and paying for elaborate dowries. A boy, on the other hand, will one day bring home a bride and dowry. Hindu custom also dictates that only sons can light their parents' funeral pyres.
Over the years, and again now, efforts have been made to fight the discrimination.
"Nakusa is a very negative name as far as female discrimination is concerned," said Satara district health officer Dr. Bhagwan Pawar, who came up with the idea for the renaming ceremony.
Other incentives, announced by federal or state governments every few years, include free meals and free education to encourage people to take care of their girls, and even cash bonuses for families with girls who graduate from high school.
Activists say the name "unwanted," which is widely given to girls across India, gives them the feeling they are worthless and a burden.
"When the child thinks about it, you know, 'My mom, my dad, and all my relatives and society call me unwanted,' she will feel very bad and depressed," said Sudha Kankaria of the organization Save the Girl Child. But giving these girls new names is only the beginning, she said.
"We have to take care of the girls, their education and even financial and social security, or again the cycle is going to repeat," she said.

Once again, allow AWESOME TKC TIPSTERS to shed some light where only local ignorance and silence exists . . .
TKC TIPSTERS ARE TELLING US THAT AN UPCOMING "DAY OF LEARNING" AT OCCUPY KC WILL FEATURE WORKSHOPS LED BY LOCAL UNION OFFICIALS!!!
This is a fact that organizers, participants and promoters aren't mentioning in their recent communications.
To wit . . . TKC is calling out the group regarding their associations . . .
IN MUCH THE SAME WAY THE TEA PARTY WAS TACITLY RACIST, THE OCCUPY KC MOVEMENT IS BEING USED LIKE PUPPETS FOR UNION INTERESTS!!!
And while Unions are great when they speak for themselves . . . Operating clandestinely and attempting to co-opt a movement that wasn't about union interests is kinda sleazy.
Let's explain why this is a contradiction to the so-called "principles" of the Occupy KC movement that has avoided any accountability by refusing to developing:
We've already documented Local 42 infiltrating Occupy KC - This is a group that basically RUNS KANSAS CITY POLITICS and has endorsed a slate of candidates that includes most of The City Council AND the Mayor. Local 42 is so powerful that their members and local firefighters are GETTING A SALARY INCREASE AHEAD OF OTHER CITY UNION MEMBERS WHO HAVE BEEN ENDURING A PAY FREEZE FOR YEARS!!!
So . . . While I'm not a friend of hedge fund managers, bankers or anybody really . . . It's easy to see . . .
OCCUPY KC IS LOSING CREDIBILITY AS A GENUINE PROTEST MOVEMENT BECAUSE OF THEIR LACK OF KNOWLEDGE REGARDING HOW KANSAS CITY POLITICS HAS BEEN CORRUPTED BY LOCAL 42 AND UNION INTERESTS!!!
Again, basically I'm a supporter of Occupy KC . . . But it's important for people who march with these folks to realize that RIGHT NOW they're doing so at the behest of Unions that already control local politics.
DEVELOPING . . .

The public should have paid closer attention to one-season show "Second Chance"when it aired during the 1987-1988 season.
Apparently the show could see into the future.
STORY: CNN, MSNBC, Fox air gruesome cell phone video of dead Gadhafi
The sitcom, which was Matthew Perry's first foray into television, featured a now slightly-eerie caricature of Libyan leader Muammar Gadhafi, who was captured and killed in Sirte, Libya, it was announced Thursday.
On the eve of the opening of Jon Bon Jovi's new community restaurant, Soul Kitchen in Red Bank, N.J., I got the chance to sit down with the singer and talk about his new project.
STORY: CNN's Fareed Zakaria to interview Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Moammar Gadhafi's death
"Second Chance," which was cancelled after just one season's run, opened in Saint Peter's Office on the then-future day of July 29, 2011. Characters' lives were judged to determine whether or not they were going to heaven or hell.
STORY: Networks hedge Gadhafi coverage as rebels take credit for killing him
Gadhafi, was the second to be judged, was told he was "quite dead, completely dead" before trying to kill St. Peter with a machine gun, before the Saint retorted "you never could take a joke." He was then sent to hell, where he was sentenced to spent eternity wired as a human bomb, blowing up every two minutes.
Battle over body delays Gadhafi's burial
So, to recap. "Second Chance," a one-season show made in 1987, predicted that ?Gadhafi would die July 29, 2011. They got the day wrong, but the year is right on.
