How much ?game? do game consoles still have?
One in eight video game consumers (13 percent) uses a console system for ?non-gaming? activities such as video or music on a daily basis, according to new findings by PwC released ahead of next week?s E3 industry convention.
Especially for gamers who subscribe to online services and/or routinely stream content, PwC says, ?It is a practical matter to use their console for non-gaming activities. Their console is already part of their entertainment system and many use it as a replacement for a cable subscription.?
Indeed, 38 percent of so-called ?heavy? gamers ? those who play games on consoles, PCs, and/or mobile device more than 10 hours per week ? use their consoles for ?non-gaming? activities for at least 4-5 hours per week.
Among the study?s other findings: The average gamer spends 3.7 hours per week playing games on a console, while spending 2.2 hours per week streaming movies or TV shows via their system. (Compare these findings to Microsoft?s claims in April that its Xbox Live user base now spends more time, in aggregate, consuming video and music than it does playing video games on the Internet-connected console, via The Wall Street Journal.)
PwC?s findings are based on a survey of 570 adult men and women between the ages of 18-59, conducted in 2012, as well as a subsequent survey of 50 teens aged 13-17. The firm also conducted focus groups to gain deeper insight into the underlying reasons for consumers? gaming behavior and preferences.

Great Books for Kids and Teens: Its Monday 5/28! What Are You ...
Happy Memorial Day!? These Monday holidays always feel strange, to not have to get up to the alarm and run around first thing on a Monday morning - not that I'm complaining!? My younger son has been in Connecticut with his grandparents this weekend, and my husband, older son, and I have been taking it easy, trying to recover a bit from our hectic weeks.? And there is lots more to come!? This week, we have a raft of school functions, leading up to Jamie's high school graduation on Friday and Craig's "graduation" from middle school next Wednesday, accompanied by lots of family visits!
So, not a lot of time for reading this week, but we all managed some:
- I am almost...wait a minute...OK.? I have just now finished The Night Circus by Erin Morganstern.? This completely unique novel grew on me, pulled me in until I felt I was part of it and came to care about the characters.? I'm sorry it is over now.
- I am still listening to Ghost Knight, a middle-grade novel by Cornelia Funke.? It's very good so far.
- My husband, Ken, is still reading A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin and enjoying it.? He thinks our oldest son would probably like it, too.
- Jamie, 17, has been reading Spiral by Roderick Gordon and Brian Williams, Book 5 of the Tunnels series.? He says the books just get better and better, and the authors have amazing imaginations!? I've only read the first one, so I will have to check out the rest of the series one of these days.
- Craig, 14, has been reading Brian's Winter by Gary Paulsen, one of many sequels to The Hatchet, a favorite in our family.

Edwards not guilty on one count; mistrial on others
The jury delivered a unanimous verdict on one of the six felony counts and found Edwards not guilty of receiving illegal campaign contributions from heiress Rachel 'Bunny' Mellon. The judge declared a mistrial on the five other counts. Edwards later told reporters that he knew he had not done anything illegal but that he was accountable for his behavior. Updated at 4:34 p.m. ET -- Capping a day of dramatic turnarounds, the?jury in the campaign finance trial of former presidential candidate John Edwards found him not guilty on Thursday one one count of accepting illegal campaign contributions and said it was deadlocked on the remaining five charges.
U.S. District Judge Catherine Eagles then declared a mistrial on the remaining charges. It was not immediately clear if prosecutors intend to seek a retrial on those charges.
In a statement outside the federal courthouse in Greensboro, N.C., Edwards acknowledged that he had behaved poorly, but said he had not acted illegally.
?I want to make sure that everyone hears from me ? that while I don?t believe I did anything illegal, ?I did an awful, awful lot that was wrong and there is no one else responsible for my sins,? said Edwards, who did not testify at the trial and took no questions.
The count on which the jury?reached a?"not guilty" verdict involved contributions from?Edwards' contributor Rachel "Bunny" Mellon.
NBC station?WNCN?of Raleigh, N.C., reported that when the decision came, Edwards closed his eyes, rubbed his face and smiled at his daughter, Cate. He then hugged his daughter and?his elderly parents while whispering to them, "I told you this would be OK," WCNC reported. Earlier, the jury of eight men and four women told Eagles?that it had reached a verdict on all six felony accounts against Edwards. But after the jury returned to the courtroom, the foreperson stated?that jurors?had reached a unanimous decision on only one count.?Eagles then sent them back to the jury room to resume deliberations.
The charges against Edwards, 58,?arose while he was in the midst of the 2008 race for the Democratic presidential nomination, and were focused on about $1 million in donations?from?two wealthy donors, Fred Baron and?Mellon, a billionnaire banking heiress. The money?was used to support and?hide Edwards' pregnant mistress, Rielle Hunter.

Prosecutors argued that the?money amounted to?illegal and unreported campaign contributions?at a time when federal?donations were capped at $2,300; the defense said?the money was a "gift" intended to allow Edwards to hide the affair from his ailing wife, Elizabeth, and the public. Elizabeth Edwards, who had previously been diagnosed with breast cancer, separated from John Edwards in early 2010 and died later that year.
If found guilty of all six counts, Edwards could have faced up to 30 years in prison and a $1.5 million fine.? Each individual count carries a maximum sentence of 5 years and a fine of up to $250,000.
Attorneys for Edwards, a former U.S. senator from North Carolina and the 2004 Democratic vice presidential nominee,?and prosecutors alike painted him?as a liar and a bad husband. Where they differed was?whether the scheme to hide his affair amounted to a crime.
The jurors?were charged with deciding?if Edwards "knowingly and willfully" violated a 1971 campaign finance law by orchestrating the scheme to support and hide Hunter.

Former Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards has faced public and private challenges throughout his life and career.
Prosecutors alleged in their closing arguments that Edwards manipulated the campaign finance system to conceal the affair with Hunter, a videographer on his 2008 presidential campaign staff.
He "clearly knew the law and decided to violate it in order to salvage his campaign," Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Higdon said, accusing Edwards of cynically seeking to "keep her quiet" until the election was over "and his wife (had) passed away."
Lead defense attorney Abbe Lowell admitted in his closing arguments that Edwards had committed many "moral wrongs," but he insisted that none of the misdeeds was "a legal one."
"John's conduct is shameful, but it's human," Lowell told the jury.
Letters and other notes from?Mellon appeared to be crucial to the jurors' deliberations ? from their first day of discussions, they requested a stream of exhibits related to the nearly $750,000 she contributed.
Mellon, who is 101 years old, didn't testify during the trial, but her attorney and financial adviser, Alex Forger, offered extensive testimony that Mellon knew that her donations were intended to fund the "Hunter problem" and weren't given as campaign contributions.
A possible turning point came in mid-May, when Judge Eagles barred most of the defense's planned testimony from current and former members of the Federal Election Commission about a federal audit that concluded that the money didn't amount to campaign contributions subject to federal regulation.
Eagles ruled that evidence about the FEC audit was inadmissible because it couldn't be determined exactly what the commission knew or was told at the time.

Dear College Grads: 4 Tips to Get Hired | OpenView Blog
With many college graduations a few weeks behind us, I have come across a slew of articles and blog posts pitying college grads who are on the job hunt. In return, I?ve seen responses from college grads upset about being thrust out into the ?real world,? jobless and feeling sorry for their ?bad luck.?
This is my wake up call for the graduates who are commiserating with their friends and explaining to their parents why they need to live at home for an extra year or so because it?s just a ?tough job market these days.? Guess what? It?s not that hard to find a decent job. The job market is picking up, so stop complaining!
Nothing grinds my gears more than people whining over something that can be addressed and proactively worked on. Instead of dismissing the idea of getting a good job after graduation, recent grads should follow these four tips and attempt to provide an example of what is possible ? instead of focusing on excuses and complaining about what?s not ? by snagging a respectable job and living the dream.
First, Be Proactive
Please don?t expect an employer to come knocking at your door to offer you a job, because that?s not going to happen ? nor has it ever happened in the past. If you haven?t already (and shame on you if you haven?t!), put together an up-to-date, proofread resume. Try out some nice looking templates, and make it look clean.? After this task is complete, start doing some research. The worst way to apply to jobs is to create a blanket application/resume/cover letter and mass-apply to every job in the area. It?s very clear when this has been done, and your application will be tossed immediately.
Be Selective
The more you narrow down your search to jobs that truly meet your background, or to jobs that are actively accepting recent college grads ? like this job! (shameless plug) ? the better chance you have of being considered. Also, since you are looking at a smaller amount of jobs, you can tailor your resume and cover letter to the company and requirements. By applying to fewer, but more realistic jobs, you?re actually increasing your odds of getting hired.
Don?t be afraid to Network
Seriously, people love helping other people out, especially if they love their company. Do not be afraid to talk to everyone you can about potential job opportunities. Even if it might seem awkward to reach out to your old professor, or even a past high school classmate, just do it! What?s the worst that could happen? They say no, I don?t want to help you (doubtful), or they simply don?t respond? Who cares? That would put you in the same spot, and best case they get you in touch with a hiring manager!
Make sure to Follow up
Okay, so you?ve applied to a job you can?t believe you?re such a perfect fit for, but you haven?t heard back. Time to move on? Not quite yet. Research (Google) an HR contact and follow up on your application. It?s very possible, especially with entry-level jobs, that your application has become lost in the shuffle. Even if the role you applied for has been filled, the company may admire your perseverance and try to find another fit for you. It?s a shame to spend so much time carefully applying to specific jobs, only to decide you?re not going to bother following up on them.
Disclaimer: Don?t become a pest! As important as it is to follow up, there is a point where it becomes annoying to the company and they will become turned off. Once is enough, twice at the very maximum.
You?re already a step ahead of the game with your college degree. I?m becoming extremely adverse to the idea of college grads who are so very disappointed to be thrown into the ?real world,? and who think their lives are over. Getting a sweet job is way better than college, and you will actually have money to spend on things that are fun. Stop crying and get to it!

A new study looking at key aquifers beneath the Great Plains and California's Central Valley suggests that areas of Texas and Kansas are drawing groundwater at an unsustainable rate.

Those are among the conclusions of a study of the nation's two major aquifers ? one underlying the high plains, the other beneath California's Central Valley ? published this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Concerns over the loss of groundwater in these areas aren't new. But the researchers say the tools they've used build a detailed picture of these critical water sources ? how the amount of water they contain varies with time, location, and regional climate patterns ? could allow for more nuanced approached to local water management.
Other water specialists suggest that the ability to combine detailed well measurements with satellite data could open the door to developing regionwide, even multistate planning for groundwater use ? an approach that currently is applied to surface water.
Moreover, careful tracking of aquifers is likely to become more critical as global warming's effects become more pronounced, particularly during the second half of this century, the team suggests.
A number of recent studies have highlighted the problem of groundwater depletion globally for irrigation, notes Bridget Scanlon, who heads the Sustainable Water Resources Program at the University of Texas at Austin and was the study's lead author.
?We wanted to look in more detail at the two areas where there has been the most groundwater depletion in the US and try to better understand what is going on so that we could see if its possible to manage them more sustainably or reduce the depletion,? she says.
Ogallala aquifer
Some of the biggest surprises involved the Ogallala aquifer, a resource that stretches north along the Texas-New Mexico border through the Oklahoma panhandle and western Kansas to extend through virtually all of Nebraska and into eastern Wyoming.
Farming in the high plains contributes about $35 billion a year to the economy. Conventional wisdom has held that from north to south, the aquifer represents ?fossil? water from the melting of the continent's glaciers at the end of the last Ice Age. And in the central and southern high plains, that remains true. This is where groundwater losses have been most pronounced.
About 4 percent of the land area above the aquifer, which falls in parts of Kansas and Texas, is responsible for about a third of its water losses, the team estimated.
But the researchers found that in the northern high plains, groundwater levels either have been holding relatively steady or have increased between 1950 and 2007 ? fed by rain and seepage from lakes that come and go with the rainy season and snow melt. Some water also finds its way underground from the Platte, Republican, and Arkansas Rivers. The water percolates through soils that are coarser than soils in the central and southern high plains.
Overall, however, the Ogallala Aquifer has lost an average of 5.3 cubic kilometers of water a year between the 1950s and 2007 ? a rate that increased to an average of 7 cubic kilometers of water between 1987 and 2007.

It?s popular these days to suggest that small businesses add social media to their customer service toolbox. After all, it?s free and where the people are, so going in that direction makes sense.
However, that being said, using social media for customer service is often something done more in theory than in actual practice for many small businesses because they think that it?s just too much work and the payoff may be negligible. The fact is though, the opposite is usually true; it is not that much work and the payoff can be huge.

Here is a small, but very telling, example:? A colleague of mine loves to eat at Morton?s Steakhouse so often that he is in their system as a ?best customer.? When he calls, Morton?s computer recognizes his phone number, they know what he likes, they call him by name, the whole nine yards. One time, at the end of a long day of flying across the country, he tweeted to his more than 100,000 Twitter followers in jest, ?Hey @Mortons, why don?t you meet me at the airport with a porterhouse steak when I land?!?

Can you guess the rest of the story? You bet. When he landed, he was stunned to find a server from Morton?s waiting for him with, yes, a porterhouse steak. The fact that the restaurant was 25 miles away from the airport was just one of his shocks.? Since he has such a large Twitter following, when he tweets he is happy with a particular company, it carries weight. You can bet that Morton?s thought delivering a steak was probably a small price to pay for such a potentially positive outcome.

There are all sorts of morals to that story, but the key one is this: The benefit of using social media for customer service, aside from being able to intercept problems (discussed below), is that resolutions like these have the potential to go viral.

In the real world, when you make a customer happy, you have one happy customer. But if you adopt and use social media for customer service, that happy customer is much more likely to become an ?e-vangelist? for your company, and tons of people will hear your success story.

And therein lies the power of this idea.

Aside from delighting customers, the other benefit of this process is that the opposite is also true ? you can put out virtual fires much more quickly if you are active on social media. If you are not present when people start posting bad things about your business, you will lose customers and might not even know why.

The actual proces
s of using social media for customer service requires three steps:

1. Engage in the conversation: Many people think that the point of social media for customer service is to deal with upset customers quicker and easier, and while that is true, it just may be that the most important part has nothing to do with upset customers.

It does have to do with delighting customers, engaging with them and creating connections with them. You can use Twitter, Facebook or LinkedIn to ask for insight and feedback from your customers. Post a poll. Get product ideas. Give them a coupon. Ask and answer questions. Forge a connection. Engage them.

2. Monitor what is being said: Now, finally, we get to the obvious purpose of using social media for customer service, namely, to deal with upset customers who are posting negative things about your business online.

This part requires some work and vigilance on your part, but it?s worth it, because left unchecked, such comments can ruin your online reputation, and that in turn can bleed into your offline one.

Consider the restaurant down the street from me that recently changed its name and completely rebranded itself. Why? Because one customer got so mad at something they did that his online assault became fatal. When the restaurant finally realized that it had an online reputation problem, it was too late. They eventually had to start over under a new, untarnished name.

So you need to monitor what is being said about you. Places you should look include:

- YouTube
- Epinions

3. Respond as soon as you see something:? Surveys show that when someone is upset enough to post something negative online about your business, they nevertheless can not only be placated, but actually have a high likelihood of becoming your customers again if you engage them online quickly and work sincerely to solve their problem. In fact, almost half will go so far as to delete the original, negative post.

Powerful 'Flame' cyber weapon found in Middle East
Security experts have discovered a new data-stealing virus dubbed "Flame" they say has lurked inside thousands of computers across the Middle East for as long as five years as part of a sophisticated cyber warfare campaign.
It is the most complex piece of malicious software discovered to date, said Kaspersky Lab security senior researcher Roel Schouwenberg, whose company discovered the virus. The results of the Lab's work were made available on Monday.
Schouwenberg said he did not know who built Flame.
If the Lab's analysis is correct, Flame could be the third major cyber weapon uncovered after the Stuxnet virus that attacked Iran's nuclear program in 2010, and its data-stealing cousin Duqu, named after the Star Wars villain.
The discovery by one of the world's largest makers of anti-virus software will likely fuel speculation that nations have already secretly deployed other cyber weapons.
"If Flame went on undiscovered for five years, the only logical conclusion is that there are other operations ongoing that we don't know about," Schouwenberg said in an interview.
The Moscow-based company is controlled by Russian malware researcher Eugene Kaspersky, and gained notoriety in cyber weapons research after solving several mysteries surrounding Stuxnet and Duqu.
Researchers at Kaspersky said they were only starting to understand how Flame works because it is so complex. The full significance will not be known until other cyber security firms obtain samples of Flame.
The Lab's research shows the largest number of infected machines are in Iran, followed by the Israel/Palestine region, then Sudan and Syria.
Complex Virus
The virus contains about 20 times as much code as Stuxnet, which attacked an Iranian uranium enrichment facility, causing centrifuges to fail. It has about 100 times as much code as a typical virus designed to steal financial information, Schouwenberg said.
Flame can gather data files, remotely change settings on computers, turn on PC microphones to record conversations, take screen shots and log instant messaging chats.
He said there was evidence to suggest the code was commissioned by the same nation or nations that were behind Stuxnet and Duqu, which were built on a common platform.
Both Flame and Stuxnet appear to infect machines by exploiting the same flaw in the Windows operating system and employ a similar way of spreading.
That means the teams that built Stuxnet and Duqu might have had access to the same technology as the team that built Flame, he said.
Schouwenberg said he believed the attack was highly targeted, aimed mainly at businesses and academic institutions.
He estimated that no more than 5,000 personal computers around the world have been infected, including a handful in North America.
Kaspersky Lab discovered Flame while investigating reports that a virus dubbed Wiper was attacking computers in Iran.
The International Telecommunications Union, a U.N. agency that promotes research and cooperation on telecommunications technology, asked Kaspersky Lab to investigate those reports.
Schouwenberg said that his team discovered Flame, but failed to turn up anything that resembled Wiper.

I can't help it, but this makes me suspicious. As someone who has spent over a decade buying, testing, and reviewing health supplements, I know that claims can be misleading and downright deceptive ? especially when the company's focus is on numbers.
The Low-Down on Body by Vi Nutrition
Since the meal-replacement protein shakes are the company's flagship product, I'll start with those. First off, I'm not a fan of anything that's marketed as a "meal-replacement." Sure, people who replace an unhealthy breakfast or lunch with a protein shake are going to lose weight ? it's simple science. But when it comes down to it, protein shakes (even with added fruit or peanut butter) should never be consistently used as replacements for entire meals.
The problem I have with this is that it doesn't teach people anything about living a healthy lifestyle. There isn't a single person currently taking the Body by Vi shakes who will continue taking them for the rest of their lives. So what will you do when you go off the program? Will you be any wiser about healthy nutrition? Probably not.
And while the shakes do contain a good number of vitamins and minerals, this is something you could easily get with a good multi-vitamin like Armor-V Vitamins which is also one of the top sellers in the market for good reason. My biggest problem with the shakes is that they contain sucralose. Sucralose is the generic name for Aspartame, and is an engineered, chemically-based artificial sweetener. In particular, sucralose has been shown in a number of scientific studies to wreak havoc on your body's blood glucose levels, leading to subsequent spikes in hunger. This is not a good thing if your goal is weight loss!
A number of their other products are labeled as "natural" but indeed contain chemically-based (e.g., "pharmaceutical glaze") and genetically-engineered (e.g., soybean oil) substances. If you look closely at the fine print, you'll see that many products were likely chosen simply because they're cheap and affordable (e.g., gelatin).
At the end of the day, you're far better off going with a whole foods diet that is high in protein, fiber, and vitamin-rich vegetables, and low in unhealthy fats, sugars, and processed foods.
Is Body by Vi a Scam?
Technically, ViSalus Sciences isn't breaking any laws when it comes to their pyramid marketing scheme. So what matters to me is whether the product claims are factual and justified. In the case of the Body by Vi product line, there is no doubt that the nutritional claims have been exaggerated and manipulated. For this reason, Body by Vi is a scam in my books. The product is simply not as healthy as the claims suggest.

BP of UK said it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to provide long-term LNG supply to Indonesia?s state electricity company, PT. PLN (Persero), for domestic Indonesian needs and also to support PLN in providing electricity for Teluk Bintuni Regency, Papua Barat province.
The MoU was signed as part of an expansion plan for the Tangguh LNG project in Papua Barat province, Indonesia.
The agreement was signed at the office of the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources by William Lin, BP Regional President Asia Pacific, and PLN?s Head of Oil Fuels and Gas Division Suryadi Mardjoeki; and witnessed by Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Jero Wacik, BPMIGAS Chairman R. Priyono, and BP Group Chief Executive Bob Dudley.
?We are pleased that the Government of Indonesia is working closely with us as we progress plans for the further development of Tangguh and, together with the partners in the Tangguh project, recognises the importance of providing LNG to both domestic and international markets,? Bob Dudley said at the signing ceremony. ?Tangguh is a significant asset for BP that helps underpin our significant gas value chain business across the Asia Pacific region.?
The MoU outlines BP?s commitment to work in partnership with PLN to reach an agreement for the supply of LNG for domestic power plant usage, as well as the supply of electricity to meet the demand of local communities and small and medium-sized enterprises in Teluk Bintuni Regency and surrounding areas.
?This MoU reflects our intention of supporting the economic development of Papua Barat, and helping meet the growing demand for energy in Indonesia as a whole, balancing the needs of all key stakeholders,? added William Lin.
Tangguh is operated by BP Indonesia as contractor to BPMIGAS. BP holds a 37.16% interest in the project. Other Tangguh contract partners are MI Berau B.V. (16.30%), CNOOC Ltd. (13.90%), Nippon Oil Exploration (Berau), Ltd. (12.23%), KG Berau/KG Wiriagar (10.00%), LNG Japan Corporation (7.35%), and Talisman (3.06%).

What this means, says retired US Army Col. Ann Wright, who?resigned from a State Department post in 2006 over US policies in Iraq,?is that?there is a?widening gap between the government, military policies, and the soldiers that carry them out.
?Military personnel know America will always have a military, but there is?growing concern?over the way it is being used,? says the 29-year veteran, adding that an increasing list of concerns include ?the use of?torture, illegal detentions, and both soldiers and the public being lied to about the actual reasons for going into combat.?
But in contrast to the extremely vocal and visible antiwar movements of the Vietnam?War era, many veterans in the all-volunteer military have found it harder to?mobilize effective actions, says Cameron?White, a former Marine who served two tours in Iraq before joining ?Iraq Veterans Against the War.?
The 32-year-old Pasadena?City college student, who enlisted in 2000, says??it?s harder to speak to fellow soldiers about their decision to join, as the onus is on us because we chose this.?
Many of the post-9/11 veterans who have served in what is now American?s longest-running military action, find that pressures that can fuel antiwar sentiment have ratcheted up with the all-volunteer army.
According to the Pew study, only some one half of one percent of Americans have served in the military in the past decade, the lowest rate in history. Even as an?unprecedented number of Americans ? some 80?percent ? are therefore sheltered from the war?s hardships because none of their relatives?are serving,?the pressures of military service?have increased.
In order to meet troop level requirements, many soldiers have been deployed as?many as six times ? a level unheard of prior to the all-volunteer military, points out Mike Hanie, an Air Force veteran and founder and executive director of the Institute for Veterans and Military Families at Syracuse University.
This growing antiwar sentiment within the veteran community, he says,?is?easily traced to the fact that ?the men and women who have served are returning home to communities where they feel that their service doesn?t matter.?
The veterans? ?families, friends, neighbors, and colleagues do not understand, or seem to care about our all-volunteer military and the sacrifices they have made defending our freedom,? he adds.
Veterans returning?to normal life are facing struggles that include uncertainty about possible redeployments, cutbacks in benefits, and an economy in recession. This has led to many troublesome results, including a suicide rate among post 9/11 veterans of some 18 veterans per day, says Dr. Harry Croft, a former Army doctor and a psychiatrist who has evaluated more than 7,000 veterans for combat-related post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and is author of the book ?I Always Sit With My Back to The Wall.?
?It?s not clear anymore what the end result is of these wars,? he says, adding?that in Iraq, for example, US troops are gone, but many vets wonder what happens now.
?We got rid of Saddam Hussein and put a democratic government in place, but the enemy still hasn?t gone away,? he notes. In addition, he says, many vets feel?that we were told before the war in Iraq that oil money was going to pay for the war, ?which of course didn?t happen.?
Afghanistan is even murkier, says Dr. Croft. ?Our troops are over there risking their lives and the Afghan people and government don?t even like us,? he says, adding ?our troops are facing suicide bombers and IEDs knowing that today might be their last day, but for what??
