Greece's debt inspectors back in Athens on Thurs (AP)

BRUSSELS ? Greece's international debt inspectors will return to Athens on Thursday after they suspended their review of the country's finances early this month amid talk of budget shortfalls.

European Commission spokesman Amadeu Altafaj Tardio said the decision to go back to Athens "follows recent announcements by the Greek authorities concerning fiscal consolidation measures that constitute an important" development.

The delegates are from the International Monetary Fund, the European Union and the European Central Bank.

Greece is fighting hard to push through austerity measures to avoid a default.

Once the fact-finding mission has made its conclusions, the finance ministers of the eurozone will organize a special meeting in October to assess them.

Scent Of Rotten Fruit Signals Sex, At Least For Fruit Flies

Waitin' on a lady digicla/Flickr

Waitin' on a lady

If you're into sexual chemistry, set an aging banana peel or apple core out on your kitchen counter, pull up a chair, and wait ? for the fruit flies.

If you are squeamish about the fruit you eat, you may want to stop reading here. Otherwise, here's the skinny about fruit flies: They like to mate ON fruit. Or whatever else that's on the fruit-fly version of the nutrition pyramid (or whatever geometric thingie the USDA is shoving its food groups into nowadays). Editor's Note: Chris, it's a plate. Try to keep up.

Scientists certainly knew about the fruit fly's mating rituals. But now they think they know why they're into fruit so much. It's the smell.

?

Female fruit flies produce pheromones ? biochemicals that affect behavior in lots of insects and animals too ? to attract males. But researchers have discovered that the brain circuits in male fruit flies that detect the female's come-hither chemical are activated FIRST by aromatic chemicals in fruit. (OK, if you have to know, it's phenylacetic acid and phenylacetaldehyde in the fruit.)

Why is this? Well, usually there's some good reason for complicated animal or insect behavior (unlike most human behavior, I'm afraid). In this case, researchers led by Richard Benton at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland, say it's to the fruit flies advantage to mate where they eat. It offers an immediate and beneficial place to lay eggs. They're born in a horn of plenty.

People have been known to use food as an aphrodisiac, too. Food won over Albert Finney in the movie Tom Jones, and cast a spell on an entire family in Like Water For Chocolate.

If you want to read more about fly love and the importance of food, you can read all about it in this week's issue of the journal Nature.

Exotic Pet Dangers In Bonita

Does your child have an unusual pet? Many Bonita parents have bypassed cats and dogs for pets that don?t leave hair, urine, or vomit on the carpet. Ease of care, however, is not always a wise trade-off. Bonita parents should be aware of the multiple health and safety risks associated with reptiles, rodents, ferrets, primates, and even fish.

The following list of pets and the possible dangers reads like a script for a horror movie:

Fish: infections that can cause lung disease, skin infections, and leprosy
Hamsters: a virus that causes irreversible nerve damage
Hedgehogs: salmonella, yersinia pseudotuberculosis, rabies, and fungal infections
Iguanas, lizards, snakes: salmonella (the animals themselves can tolerate levels of salmonella far greater than humans)
Monkeys and other primates: herpes B (can cause meningitis in humans), tuberculosis, serious injury
Ferrets: these fierce critters with razor-sharp teeth have maimed many children
Prairie dogs: tuleremia (often fatal infection)
African Gambian rats: monkeypox (smallpox-related disease)

The foregoing information was taken from an excellent U.S. News article which can be found at http://health.usnews.com/health-news/blogs/on-parenting/2008/10/06/8-pets-that-pose-major-health-threats-to-kids

With proper hygiene and safety precautions these pets may not cause problems, but it is important to understand the possible dangers. Consult an expert for comprehensive instructions on caring for any traditional or non-traditional pet.

Online Gaming Creates New Learning Opportunities - Online Colleges

By Jill Rooney, Ph.D.

The ongoing debate over the relevance and usefulness of online gaming as an educational tool may come to abrupt end on the heels of a recent scientific study, which?announced that players on the online science game site Foldit had unlocked one of the biggest mysteries surrounding the structure of a protein crucial to understanding how AIDS develops. These gamers were able to predict the structure of an enzyme called retroviral protease, an agent that allows?the HIV virus to multiply. Knowledge of this structure is a monumental step forward in creating medications that may halt the advancement of this devastating disease by stopping the way the enzyme multiplies. This is a startling development because it can have major ramifications for world health and possibly?save the lives of millions. According to the UNAIDS Report, 2.6 million people around the world became newly infected with the HIV/AIDS virus in 2010. For these people and the millions already suffering, gamers?not research scientists?may have provided a life-saving piece of information.

Gaming has long been a contentious issue in higher education. It has been of particular interest to instructors in online college courses, because it can provide?a different?method?of introducing students to course material and, in some instances, can be a non-intimidating way of breaking down some of the hesitance and confusion students new to online education may have about their online work. Some faculty, though, automatically reject online gaming as an entertaining but ultimately un-serious activity not suited for truly academic endeavors and, whenever the topic arises, cast a jaded eye at online gaming, sighing as yet another technological development is touted as key to better class instruction.

However, many education and technology experts?increasingly argue that online gaming can be an effective aid to instruction. In their paper The Instructional Power of Digital Games, Social Networking, Simulations and How Teachers Can Leverage Them, Eric Klopfer, Scot Osterweil, Jennifer Groff, and Jason Haas of the Education Arcade at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology argue that faculty members need to expand their understanding of online gaming beyond Nintendo, the Wii, or simple online games like mah jong and solitaire. The ability to create computer simulations that mimic real-life scenarios can help students process and respond to course information. They report that gaming, typically defined as an activity that includes both ?an interactive virtual playing environment and the struggle of the player against some kind of opposition,??allows students to assimilate information in order to create strategy. These activities involve comprehension skills, critical thinking, and decision-making.

For me, a professional historian, the example?the MIT group provides of the online game Civilization is persuasive. Civilization is considered an ?immersive? game, similar to The Sims and World of Warcraft, because it allows players to assume new identities and create a virtual community. The latest version, Civilization IV,asks players to assume the identity of a settler in the year 4000 B.C. and then build a city, government structure, culture (including religion in the latest version), and all the other elements of society and state-building. Players must collaborate with team members to advance their civilizations.?

As I struggle to teach students the components of civilization and train them to evaluate the relative merits of?major civilizations throughout time, this online game can actually help me show students how both deliberate and random events can trigger changes in historical development.? That is a concept that is often difficult to convey, but with the Civilization online game, students can experience it for themselves. And, as Rafael C. Alvarado argues in his essay, Overcoming the Fear of Gaming: A Strategy for Incorporating Games into Teaching and Learning, faculty can adapt?games to suit their instructional goals or assign it in conjunction with a textbook that students will have to use to measure the veracity of the game itself.

The benefits of online gaming extend beyond newer options for content delivery. Gaming can also help students transition from traditional learning to online learning because they are already familiar with the technology, from their participation in social media and other online activities. For example, the results a 2003 study of college students at different kinds of two and four year colleges, conducted by the Pew Research Center, show that all of those surveyed reported to have played a video, computer or online game at one time or another. Seventy percent (70%) of college students reported playing video, computer or online games at least once in a while, and 65% of college students reported being regular or occasional game players.

That was 8 years ago. With the addition of Facebook, Twitter, and other online social media activities, chances are that very near 100% of today?s college students are familiar with online technologies on at least a basic level?perhaps more so than their professors. Using online gaming technology in the classroom utilizes student skills as a method of advancing student knowledge?one of my primary goals as an instructor. My students might not discover the key to solving the world?s HIV/AIDS crisis, but I am certainly not going to dismiss any new route to learning that might have such unlimited potential. And for students, this means that online learning might become just as much fun as any of their other online activities.

Docs Think We Get Too Much Doctoring

60-Second Health | Health

Many U.S. physicians think that their patients and their patient's purses could get by with less medical care. Katherine Harmon reports

More 60-Second Health

When was the last time you left the doctor's office without a prescription, test or referral? It's probably been a while. And many argue that this increase in care?more drugs, procedures and tests?is a big reason the U.S. spends about twice as much on healthcare as other industrialized countries.

Despite all the extra treatment, the U.S. ranks only 36th in life expectancy, just below Cuba.

Even doctors say we could do a little less doctoring. Forty-two percent of primary care physicians think their own patients are getting too much healthcare. That?s according to a survey analysis published in the Archives of Internal Medicine. [Brenda E. Sirovich, Steven Woloshin and Lisa M. Schwartz, "Too little? Too much? Primary care physicians' views on U.S. health care"]

So why do docs keep giving these extra tests, meds and referrals? To avoid malpractice suits, according to the report. More than three quarters of physicians fessed up to practicing more aggressively because they worried about being sued. This fear is so pervasive that it has its own name: "defensive medicine." But to keep patients healthier and costs down, maybe it's time to send this kind of practice to the morgue.

Crossing Over to The New Age of The Family Automotive ...

The ?crossover? vehicle is one in every of the hottest crazes sweeping the constant changing world of the family car. Crossover vehicles provide customers the advantages of both a automotive and an SUV.

A crossover vehicle has the advantages of a SUV or Mini Van with a automobile-primarily based platform, with ride, handling and performance characteristics almost like cars. They?ll appear either station wagon or SUV like in appearance. Crossover vehicles are quieter and lighter than a typical SUV, offer a smoother ride and are typically additional fuel efficient.

What makes the crossover different from an SUV is that the independent suspension creating them easier to handle. They are quieter, lighter and more aerodynamic and typically a much smoother ride. Crossover vehicles don?t seem to be meant to be used as an off road vehicle however I doubt very abundant most people will miss the off-roading capabilities of the SUV. Consistent with MSN Autos, 85% of men and 89.2% of girls have not driven their SUV off-road ? not shocking statistics.

The crossover looks to be the entire package for consumers wavering between a automobile and an SUV as it offers what seem to be the most effective qualities of car and SUV, providing excellent traction, better drive height than an SUV (making parking easier!) and carrying capacity that is appealing concerning the SUV. Definitely an engaging mix, I?m betting a lot of and more shoppers can be joining the crossover craze for his or her next family vehicle.

The prime most fuel efficient crossover vehicles as listed by AOL Autos are the Hybrid options:

Ford Escape Hybrid ? thirty one mpg highway and thirty four mpg city Lexus RX400IT ? 24 mpg hwy and 26 mpg town Toyota Highlander Hybrid ? twenty five mpg highway and 27 mpg town Chevy Tahoe Hybrid ? 22 mpg highway and twenty one mpg town

A Hybrid Crossover can price you a lot of upon purchase but can prevent cash at the pump in the future not to mention abate on emissions. However if you?re wanting for a additional economical option upon purchase there are these entry level crossovers that are fairly fuel efficient:

Honda CRV ? twenty seven mpg highway and twenty mpg town Hyundai Sante Fe ? twenty four mpg highway and 17 mpg town Kia Sportage ? 28 mpg highway and twenty three city Ford Edge ? twenty four mpg highway and 16 mpg town

When choosing your next family vehicle whether or not it is a crossover, SUV or a Mini Van, do your analysis, check out user reviews, compare safety standards and create certain it?s the best match for you and your family.

Smuggling Boat Found in Ventura County | KEYT.com - News ...

Story Created: Sep 24, 2011 PDT

Story Updated: Sep 24, 2011 at 5:22 PM PDT

The Ventura County Sheriff and Fire Department, Ventura Harbor Patrol, Environmental Health, the US Coast Guard and US Customs are taking turns investigating an abandoned boat on the shore of La Conchita today. Authorities received a call about the Panga boat at 8am this morning.

Authorities say smuggling boats are commonly used to arrive in California, because of the open coastline. Half of the cases involve drugs and half involve human smuggling. There is no official statement at this time, but we are told this boat likely carried human cargo - judging by the life vests and items found in the boat.

The boat arrived on shore during the night. To escape detection, the owners painted it in dull paint and placed a wet sleeping bag over the engine. A transient saw the boat at five this morning but said all occupants had already fled.

Key News reporter Sharon Weston has more details. Be sure to tune into the Special Edition of KEY News tonight, following the game.

Medicare Supplement Insurance ... - Medical MAG ? Stay Healthy

Article by Wiley Long

While all health insurance covers some kind of health care, plans that are designed for Medicare beneficiaries have very different rules.? When you?re eligible for Medicare, you can rely solely on its coverage, or you can augment that.? Before making any decision, take a look at what Medicare provides.??

Part A, which is free for most people, addresses hospital charges.? Unfortunately, Part A only helps after you have met a ,132 deductible per benefit period (2011).? Rather than the annual deductible you?re probably used to seeing on health insurance policies, the Part A deductible only lasts until you have not needed hospital or skilled nursing facility inpatient care for 60 straight days.

If a fractured hip lands you in the hospital, Medicare will pick up the bill for charges in excess of that ,132 deductible up to a 60-day limit.? When you need a longer hospital stay, Medicare downgrades to partial coverage.? Spending enough to meet the Part A deductible does not meet the deductible for the whole year, though.? A deductible period ends when you have not been in the hospital or in a skilled nursing facility for 60 consecutive days.??

If you fall later in the year, get pneumonia, or anything that necessitates hospitalization, you may be into another benefit period, which will trigger another deductible.??

Medicare Supplement Insurance Options Work In Various Ways

You basically have two choices to add to your Medicare coverage.? You can replace the government-funded coverage with one the Medicare Advantage Plans offered by private insurance companies.? You?ll get all the coverage available through Medicare and, usually, some extra bonuses, like help with hearing aids and eyeglasses.

Unlike Medicare, Medicare Advantage Plans operate under individual company rules within Medicare?s guidelines.? The prescriptions covered by these private plans will be different.? The network of providers will probably be more limited, too.

If there are no Medicare Advantage Plans available where you live, you will probably have access to at least some of the Medicare Supplement Plans that are also offered through private insurers.

Known as Medigap Plans, these supplements do not replace Medicare in the manner than Advantage plans do.? Medigap Insurance works with Medicare to pay for services that Medicare doesn?t cover.??

For example, Medicare?s coverage for doctor visits is limited to 80 percent of a standard amount per specific service after you?ve met what?s known as the Part B deductible.? That?s 2 for 2011 and it is an annual deductible, unlike the Part A one.?

After you meet that deductible, if your doctor accepts Medicare payments, you?ll still owe for 20 percent of each bill.? If your doctor charges in excess of Medicare?s payment, you?ll owe for 20 percent of Medicare?s pre-determined rate for that service plus anything above Medicare?s pre-determined amount that your doctor charges.

Medigap Plans can cover all of your out-of-pocket costs under Medicare depending on which form of Medigap Insurance you choose.? While Medicare Advantage Plans operate under separate rules, Medigap Plans are run under only 10 sets of coverage.? These plans are labeled Plan A, Plan B, etc., to specify what benefits are included.? Once you decide which benefits you want, you?re well on your way to finding the plan you want.

Medigap Insurance Pricing Various Tremendously

You?d think that plans with the same coverage would cost relatively the same, or least be in the same ballpark.? That?s not the case with Medigap Plans offered through different insurance companies, though.? The only way to know whether you?re paying more than you need to for a specific plan, like Medigap Plan F, is to check out rates from lots of companies for that plan.

While that may sound like too much trouble, consider that people have been found to be paying literally hundreds of dollars more than others for the very same coverage.? Checking rates from several insurers is really easy if you use the Internet, too.? Find a website that instantly searches for rates available where you live for a specific Medigap Plan, and you can see a side-by-side comparison in less than a minute.?

It may not be worth buying a computer just for that, but libraries and senior centers sometimes provide free Internet access that?s long enough to allow you to search and compare rates.? You can also find extensive Internet resources to help you understand how Medicare, Medicare Advantage Plans and Medigap Insurance work.

Natural Skin Care: The Why And The How's - Health and Fitness ...

This is exactly the age when skin products, which unfortunately can be hardly distinguishable from one another, are being introduced here and there. And they can really be confusing. If you find yourself overwhelmed by the myriad of products that essentially promise nothing but the old story, here?s the good news. Having a perfect skin does not primarily depend on these skin products, because, in this going-for-green phase of human history, natural skin care beats them all.

Going natural is still the best way to having a youthful and radiant skin. Not only is it healthy, it is also cheap. Not only does it benefit your skin, it is also advantageous to your entire body. And not only is it momentary, it can work for a longer duration. After hitching into the hype about skin care products, now is the time to bend your view about skin care a little bit, and getting a few suggestions on natural skin care is a good way to jumpstart.

1. Watch your diet. Remember the adage, ?You are what you eat?? This speaks volume about skin care. Keep in mind that a good and healthy diet translates to an equally healthy skin. If you are troubled with unusual breakouts, dryness, and rough skin, ask yourself what you have been eating. Maybe you need to make a few changes in your diet. A good diet consists of foods rich in fiber; such as grains, legumes, and beans; and healthy fats; like flaxseed oil, walnut oil, and omega-3 fish. It also has fruits and vegetables high in vitamins such as vitamins A, B, B2, and E; fiber; calcium; iodine; and protein. Less sugar should also be included in the diet, as excess sugar is linked to premature aging. It is generally understood that changing diet is not an easy task, but take baby steps first. If you?ve gotten the hang of it, things will be a lot easier.

2. Hydrate. Drinking lots of water, preferably six to eight glasses, replenishes the body and helps wash out waste and toxins. It also prevents skin dryness. The common observation from people with acne, psoriasis, and other skin problems is that they also suffer from constipation, a telltale sign of low water intake.

3. Have a regular exercise. If you spend most of the day sitting or with few body activities, you are likely to subject yourself to skin problems such as acne and cellulite. Of course, this is not so appealing. So if you can, enroll in a gym. Or if time and money are an issue, allot at least five minutes of exercise or stretching before going to work. Get a quick office break and do some walking. Bottom line is, do anything you can to get your body moving. You don?t want simple inactivity to ruin your skin, do you?

4. Make your own skin care products. Whip up your own facial mask, cleanser, toner, or any other skin essential from the comforts of your own kitchen. Doing so can save you some amount from buying skin products, and, at the same time, give you your share of peace by knowing what goes into that thing you put on your face. This is natural skin care in the literal sense of the term.

Seahawks demote LB Curry - Fantasy Sports

The Seahawks reportedly have demoted OLB Aaron Curry, the fourth overall pick in the 2009 draft, after two-plus disappointing seasons as a starter.

The final straw might have been when Curry dropped a would-be interception that could have been returned for a touchdown during the Seahawks' 24-0 loss at Pittsburgh in Week Two.

Curry, 25, has never developed into the playmaker that Seattle thought it was getting when he came out of Wake Forest three years ago. In 32 NFL games, to date, he has only 5? sacks, four forced fumbles and zero interceptions.

He was moved to second on the OLB depth chart this week, with rookie fourth-rounder K.J. Wright working with the first-team defense in practice.

"I don't even know how to put it into words," Curry said. "But it is what it is. ? Everything happens for a reason. There's a purpose behind everything, and I'll find it and learn from it and take off running."

Small dent in jobless rate seen from Obama's plan (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Even if Congress heeds President Barack Obama's demands to "pass this bill right away" and enacts his jobs and tax plan in its entirety, the unemployment rate probably still would hover in nosebleed territory for at least three more years.

Why? Because the 1.9 million new jobs the White House says the bill would produce in 2012 falls short of what's needed to put the economy back on track to return to pre-recession jobless levels of under 6 percent, from today's rate of 9.1 percent.

That's how deep the jobs hole is. The persistent weakness of the U.S. economy has left 14 million people unemployed and more than 25 million unable to find full-time work.

Economists of all stripes pretty much agree that it will be a long, hard road no matter what Congress does. Right now, the Republicans who run the House and the Democrats who lead the Senate aren't finding much common ground.

Obama estimates his American Jobs Act would lower unemployment by just a single percentage point by next year, to just over 8 percent, heading into the 2012 presidential election.

Burned before by making overly optimistic job-creation predictions, the White House turned to prominent outside economists to crunch the numbers.

The projection of 1.9 million new jobs, a 1 percentage point drop in the unemployment rate and a 2 percentage point increase in the gross domestic product under Obama's plan came from Mark Zandi, chief economist of Moody's Analytics.

But Zandi said in an interview his forecast also is based on an assumption that "the president's entire package is passed by the end of the year," a slim prospect given the current divided leadership in Congress, and that there are no other budgetary policy changes.

"I assumed that it would be paid for," Zandi said. "I didn't know when I did that simulation how the president proposed to pay for it."

Since then, Obama has said he would pay for his $447 billion package with permanent income tax increases of about $150 billion a year, mostly on wealthy individuals and corporations, in addition to spending cuts. That's drawn criticism from Republicans, who say any tax increases could further stall the fragile recovery.

Zandi, who has advised both Republican and Democratic lawmakers, said he's still sticking with his forecast, mainly because the stimulus in the plan, including a temporary reduction in Social Security taxes for both employees and employers and infrastructure spending, would come in 2012 and be paid for later.

But there is one feature Obama doesn't emphasize.

Zandi said his job-creation figure only applies to 2012.

"Beginning in 2013, and certainly into 2014, the plan is a drag on the economy because the stimulus starts fading away," he said. "So by 2015, the economy is in the same place as now, as if there were no jobs package."

Also, Zandi said, his forecast does not leave any room for a new recession. If that happens, all bets are off.

"So it's very important to get as many people working as fast as possible," he said. "If we go back into recession, it is going to be very difficult to get out. And it's going to cost taxpayers tremendously."

Job creation has ground to a virtual standstill. The economy produced a scant 20,000 net new jobs in June, 85,000 in July and none in August. Economic output, as measured by the GDP, has been growing this year at an anemic annual rate below 1 percent.

The global economy is showing no signs of strengthening. A divided Federal Reserve is nearly out of ammunition for additional stimulus. And the U.S. is once again facing the possibility of a government shutdown at the end of next week.

Obama promoted his package anew in his Saturday radio and internet address, saying the mix of tax cuts and direct spending would put tens of thousands of teachers back to work and modernize at least 35,000 schools. He again called on lawmakers to pass the bill "right now."

The Obama-Zandi target of 1.9 million new jobs next year, or 158,000 a month, is somewhat higher than private analyses that suggest the plan would create 100,000 to 150,000 jobs a month.

Heidi Shierholz, economist for the labor-leaning Economic Policy Institute, calculates it would take job growth of 400,000 every month for three years in a row to get back to the 5 percent jobless rate last seen in December 2007, at the recession's outset.

"To get down to 5 percent in five years, we need around 280,000 jobs every month," she added. "Right now, we're more than two years into the official recovery, and we're still bumping along at extremely low levels."

What if Obama gets none of what he requested? She said failure to renew some current anti-recessionary programs such as extended unemployment insurance and the existing Social Security tax break for employees "will be a big blow" both to the economy and to the employment picture.

More likely, Congress will probably produce a watered-down version.

As long as the GDP grows at an annual rate beneath 2.5 percent, it cannot create enough jobs for new entrants into the workforce, let alone to re-employ those laid off during the downturn, said Martin Regalia, chief economist for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the nation's biggest business lobby.

The chamber estimates it will take 20 million jobs over the next decade to get the economy back to pre-recession levels. It has its own jobs plan, which includes increased trade, greater oil drilling, quicker road and bridge construction and temporary corporate tax breaks.

"If you want to go from 9.1 percent down to 5.5 or 6 percent unemployment, you're going to have to grow roughly at 4.5 percent (GDP) for three years," Regalia said. "I don't see that in the forecast."

In the first six months of this year, the GDP grew at a scant 0.7 percent rate. Private forecasters see it growing about 2 percent in the final six months of 2011, about 2.5 percent throughout 2012, and increasing to about 3.2 percent in 2013.

Obama is quick to acknowledge a rocky road ahead.

"For a decade now, incomes and wages have flat-lined for the American people ? for ordinary Americans, for working families," he says. "They are working harder, making less, with higher expenses. And that's been going on for a long, long time."

Protein 'switches' could turn cancer cells into tiny chemotherapy factories

Friday, September 23, 2011

Johns Hopkins researchers have devised a protein "switch" that instructs cancer cells to produce their own anti-cancer medication.

In lab tests, the researchers showed that these switches, working from inside the cells, can activate a powerful cell-killing drug when the device detects a marker linked to cancer. The goal, the scientists said, is to deploy a new type of weapon that causes cancer cells to self-destruct while sparing healthy tissue.

This new cancer-fighting strategy and promising early lab test results were reported this week in the online early edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Although the switches have not yet been tested on human patients, and much more testing must be done, the researchers say they have taken a positive first step toward adding a novel weapon to the difficult task of treating cancer.

One key problem in fighting cancer is that broadly applied chemotherapy usually also harms healthy cells. In the protein switch strategy, however, a doctor would instead administer a "prodrug," meaning an inactive form of a cancer-fighting drug. Only when a cancer marker is present would the cellular switch turn this harmless prodrug into a potent form of chemotherapy.

"The switch in effect turns the cancer cell into a factory for producing the anti-cancer drug inside the cancer cell," said Marc Ostermeier, a Johns Hopkins chemical and biomolecular engineering professor in the Whiting School of Engineering, who supervised development of the switch.

"The healthy cells will also receive the prodrug," he added, "and ideally it will remain in its non-toxic form. Our hope is that this strategy will kill more cancer cells while decreasing the unfortunate side effects on healthy cells."

To demonstrate that these switches can work, the research team successfully tested them on human colon cancer and breast cancer cells in Ostermeier's lab and in the laboratory of James R. Eshleman, a professor of pathology and oncology in the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

"This is a radically different tool to attack cancers," said Eshleman, a co-author of the PNAS journal article, "but many experiments need to be done before we will be able to use it in patients."

The next step is animal testing, expected to begin within a year, Ostermeier said.

Ostermeier's team made the cancer-fighting switch by fusing together two different proteins. One protein detects a marker that cancer cells produce. The other protein, from yeast, can turn an inactive prodrug into a cancer-cell killer. "When the first part of the switch detects cancer, it tells its partner to activate the chemotherapy drug, destroying the cell," Ostermeier said.

In order for this switch to work, it must first get inside the cancer cells. Ostermeier said this can be done through a technique in which the switch gene is delivered inside the cell. The switch gene serves as the blueprint from which the cell's own machinery constructs the protein switch. Another approach, he said, would be to develop methods to deliver the switch protein itself to cells.

Once the switches are in place, the patient would receive the inactive chemotherapy drug, which would turn into a cancer attacker inside the cells where the switch has been flipped on.

Although many researchers are developing methods to deliver anti-cancer drugs specifically to cancer cells, Ostermeier said the protein switch tactic skirts difficulties encountered in those methods.

"The protein switch concept changes the game by providing a mechanism to target production of the anti-cancer drugs inside cancer cells instead of targeting delivery of the anti-cancer drug to cancer cells," he said.

Resorts that celebrities love | VIPLeisureTravel's Blog

When you spend much of your life being chased by the paparazzi, rest and relaxation take on a whole new meaning.

But where do you go when the whole world knows your name and your face?

Like most vacationers seeking a luxury getaway, celebrities look for a fabulous location, impeccable service and posh accommodations. Privacy, of course, is a must.

A-listers can also afford the best of the best, so they expect royal treatment ? and they get it.

When five-star hotels know they have celebrities in-house, they do everything they possibly can to accommodate them, including indulging any special requests, said Jacqueline Gifford, travel editor for Brides Magazine.

But the great service and hospitality at these places isn?t limited to just bold-faced names.

?When you?re paying that much money to stay at a fabulous place, they?re going to go over the top to pamper you, whether you?re a celebrity or not,? Gifford said.

With that in mind, here are seven resorts used to catering to famous guests:

North Island, Seychelles

With its exotic location in the Indian Ocean, lush tropical beauty and a secluded beach, no wonder Britain?s Prince William and his bride, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, chose this resort for their honeymoon spot in the spring.

The island is home to 11 guest villas that ?blend seamlessly? with their surroundings and are ?designed to celebrate nature,? the resort says, touting its eco-friendly philosophy.

Guests share the retreat with tortoises and endangered species of birds, such as the Black Paradise Flycatcher and the Seychelles Magpie Robin. You might also get a peek at the coco-de-mer palm, which produces the largest seeds in the plant kingdom.

It?s this combination of beauty and privacy that draws celebrities.

David and Victoria Beckham celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary on the island in 2009. Actress Salma Hayek has honeymooned there.

Le Sirenuse, Positano, Italy

Italy?s Amalfi Coast is one of the most picturesque corners of the planet, and it?s here that you?ll find the legendary Le Sirenuse in the village of Positano.

?It?s a beautiful hotel,? said Roberto Agostini of Precision Travel. ?It?s recognized all over the world as one of the top hotels in the area.?

He also praised its location, which is near all of the village?s shopping and dining.

?You walk out and you are there where the action is,? Agostini said.

Almost all of the resort?s 59 rooms and suites look out over the bay of Positano, and most have a private terrace or balcony.

You?ll also find spectacular views at the hotel?s La Sponda restaurant, where 400 candles are lit during dinner to create a romantic atmosphere for guests feasting on Neapolitan cuisine.

Actress Reese Witherspoon recently spent her second honeymoon at the hotel ? this time with her new husband, Jim Toth.

Sandy Lane, St. James, Barbados

Set on the Caribbean island?s upscale west coast ? often called the ?Platinum Coast? ? the resort is known for its deluxe accommodations and signature pink beach chairs and umbrellas that contrast beautifully with the turquoise sea.

?It is a very, very, very high-end resort. It?s legendary (for its) style and sophistication,? said Becky Veith of Travel Experts. ?The rooms are absolutely spectacular. They?re state-of-the-art everything.?

And how about this for privacy: The resort has underground hallways so that you don?t have to see any housekeeping activities when you leave your room, Veith said.

There?s also a spa that?s ?to die for? and world-class golf at the Green Monkey golf course, she added.

Celebrity guests have included Gwyneth Paltrow and her husband, Chris Martin, television personality Simon Cowell and singer Rihanna.

Tiger Woods rented the whole resort in happier times: He got married there to Elin Nordegren in 2004.

Hotel Hassler, Rome

Located at the top of the world?s most famous stairway and offering a sweeping view above the churches, domes and rooftops of Rome, this former palazzo boasts elegance, style and ?discretion.?

Stay at the classic hotel and you?ll add your name to a register that has included Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, who took over part of the Hassler before their wedding in 2006; Jennifer Lopez; Leonardo DiCaprio; and many other A-listers.

Prince Rainier of Monaco and Grace Kelly even spent part of their honeymoon at the hotel.

?The Hassler is amazing because it?s at the top of the Spanish Steps so you?ve got an awesome view of Rome. They have amazing service and some fantastic suites,? Gifford said.

Agostini agreed, calling the view of the Eternal City ?unbeatable.?

?It?s very romantic up there,? he said.

Esperanza, Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

Just a two-hour flight away from Los Angeles, sunny Cabo San Lucas is perfect for a quick, relaxing and romantic getaway for stressed-out Hollywood types.

This luxurious resort overlooks both the Sea of Cortez and Punta Ballena ? or ?Whale Point,? past which humpbacks migrate in winter ? says Travel+Leisure, which has named Esperanza one of the?world?s top 50 hotels.

All the hotel?s suites and villas offer ocean views. Some have private pools, a dedicated butler and private chefs for ?in-villa dining.?

This is where LeAnn Rimes and Eddie Cibrian honeymooned in May. Paltrow and Martin have stayed as well.

Le Meurice, Paris

With the Tuileries Garden, the Place de la Concorde and the Louvre all just steps away, guests staying at the opulent Le Meurice are in the heart of the City of Light.

?It?s one of the best hotels in the world,? Agostini said. ?I would recommend Le Meurice to anybody ? kings, queens, anybody.? (It?s the kind of place where there are attendants inside the elevators to punch your floor buttons for you.)

Beyonc? and Jay-Z rented the two-story penthouse suite for $20,000 a night in April,?People.com reported.

Gifford spotted Harrison Ford in the lobby when she stayed there, ?which was very exciting,? she said.

Past guests have also included Orson Welles, Ginger Rogers, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.

St. Regis Princeville Resort, Kauai, Hawaii

If Hawaii is paradise, then this is an especially lovely corner of it, surrounded by five mountains, a wildlife refuge, hiking trails, ancient sea caves and lagoons.

?Kauai is a little bit more secluded ? it?s a little quieter than some of the isles and the resort is on the very sleepy but lush North Shore,? Gifford said.

?Every (suite) has butler service, they?ve got an amazing infinity pool, gorgeous mountain views ? it?s going to attract a very exclusive crowd.?

Exclusive indeed: Alicia Keys, George Clooney, Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck all have been to the hotel.

Ready to experience the celebrity status. Book one of these destinations and you will feel like a celebrity. Call us today at 877-229-6008 or 757-229-6008.

Watch surgeons remove 'glowing' cancer [video] - Holy Kaw!

The first fluorescence-guided surgery on an ovarian cancer patient was performed using a cancer cell ?homing device? and imaging agent.

The surgery was one of 10 performed as part of the first phase of a clinical trial to evaluate a new technology to aid surgeons in the removal of malignant tissue from ovarian cancer patients. The method illuminates cancer cells to help surgeons identify and remove smaller tumors that could otherwise be missed.

Philip Low, a professor of chemistry at Purdue University, who invented the technology, says surgeons were able to see clusters of cancer cells as small as one-tenth of a millimeter, as opposed to the earlier average minimal cluster size of 3 millimeters in diameter based on current methods of visual and tactile detection.

Senate blocks House disaster aid bill (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The Democratic-led Senate blocked a House bill on Friday that would provide disaster aid and keep government agencies open, escalating the parties' latest showdown over spending and highlighting the raw partisan rift that has festered all year.

In a tit-for-tat battle, the Senate used a near party-line vote of 59-36 to derail the measure passed earlier by the Republican-run House. That bill would fund federal agencies and provide $3.7 billion in disaster assistance, partly paying for that aid with cuts in two Energy Department loan programs that finance technological development.

With the support of 10 GOP senators, the Senate had voted last week to provide $6.9 billion in disaster aid and no cuts to help pay for it.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., offered a compromise Friday that would accept the House's lower level of disaster spending but lacked the loan program cuts. Republicans delayed a vote on Reid's measure until Monday, and they seem likely to block it then because Democrats would need 60 votes to win passage ? exceeding the 53 votes they have.

The dispute pitted GOP objections that the disaster spending would worsen the government's budget problems unless savings were included against Democratic complaints that cutting the energy loan programs would stifle the economy and cost jobs.

The fresh round of brinksmanship came with lawmakers facing two deadlines. The Federal Emergency Management Agency's fund for disaster victims could run out of money early next week, even as claims from Hurricane Irene and other recent disasters continue to accumulate. And Congress has completed none of the 12 annual spending bills for the federal fiscal year that begins Oct. 1, meaning agencies would have to close their doors that day without fresh funding.

"We've agreed to their number on FEMA," Reid said. "I mean, do they want the government to shut down? Do they want FEMA to close?"

Reid said he believed the Senate would consider the issue on Monday and that "reasonable heads will prevail."

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said Democrats want to continue the Washington custom of financing emergency spending by adding to colossal federal deficits.

"If there's any lesson we can draw from the debates we've been having here over the last six months, it's that the American people won't accept that excuse anymore," McConnell said. "The whole, `that's the way we've always done it' argument is the reason we've got a $14 trillion dollar debt right now."

Besides its emergency aid, the measure the House passed early Friday would temporarily prevent a federal shutdown by financing government agencies from the Oct. 1 start of the new fiscal year through Nov. 18. It was approved by a near party-line 219-203 vote.

White House spokesman Jay Carney faulted House Republicans for the deadlock, saying they had passed legislation knowing it would die in the Senate, just as they had during last month's fight over extending the federal debt limit.

"The fever hasn't broken ? the behavior that we saw this summer that really repelled Americans continues," Carney said.

Republicans blamed Democrats, saying the House-passed bill had enough money for the Federal Emergency Management Agency and that Democratic opposition to it was all about politics.

"The American people are sick and tired of political games," said House Appropriations Committee Chairman Harold Rogers, R-Ky. "Shutting down the government and cutting off essential programs that our people rely on is bad enough, but leaving disaster-stricken families and communities in the lurch in their hour of greatest need is simply reprehensible."

It was unclear how the standoff would be resolved. The House and Senate had both planned to take next week off, but neither seemed likely to risk accusations of ignoring the thousands of Americans victimized by natural calamities or of allowing the government to shut its doors.

House passage represented a reversal from an embarrassing setback the chamber dealt its Republican leaders on Wednesday. On that day, the House rejected a nearly identical measure, shot down by Democrats complaining its disaster aid was too stingy and conservative Republicans upset that its overall spending was too extravagant.

The bill the House approved Friday morning contained just one change ? an additional $100 million in savings from cutting a second Energy Department loan program, this one aimed at sparking new energy technologies.

That is the same program that financed a $528 million federal loan to Solyndra Inc., the California solar panel maker that won praise from President Barack Obama but has since gone bankrupt and laid off its 1,100 workers. The Obama administration had praised Solyndra as a model for green energy companies, but now Congress is investigating the circumstances under which the government approved the loan.

The gridlock over the spending bill was the third time this year the two parties have clashed over legislation whose passage both sides considered crucial.

In April with just hours to spare, the two sides reached agreement on a bill that averted a federal shutdown and provided money for government agencies through September. Then this summer, they battled for weeks before finally approving legislation extending the government's borrowing authority and narrowly preventing a historic federal default.

Against a backdrop of the 2012 presidential and congressional elections and angst over the country's dismal job market, this year's clashes have been intensified by the infusion of dozens of tea party Republicans who often show little inclination to compromise.

Wednesday's defeat of the spending bill was only the most recent time they have made life difficult for House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio. And it underscored the challenges ahead this fall as Congress tackles efforts to fix the economy, create jobs and try to control the $14 trillion national debt.

Smart arms for a robot give it smooth moves

Jacob Aron, technology reporter

Reaching out from under a table to grab a cup of coffee on top might seem like a simple task, but it actually involves planning a mathematically complex journey. That's no problem for humans, who can intuitively skip the maths and jump straight to the caffeine fix, but robots are forced to crunch the numbers. Now researchers have found a shortcut that could help make robots a little more human.

Current motion-planning algorithms take too long to find the most efficient path from one position to another, so they simply fall back on calculating a path that won't cause the robot's limbs to smack into the table. This gets the job done, but can lead to peculiar sets of motion that waste time and energy - not to mentioning potentially frightening any nearby humans. "People are most comfortable when the robot behaves in the way that a human would," says Matthew Walter, a computer scientist at MIT, whose team have developed a new algorithm.

The problem lies with the number of separate motions a robot arm can make, known as the degrees of freedom. A human arm has seven degrees of freedom - the shoulder moves in three directions, while the wrist and elbow moves in two. Finding the most efficient path involves evaluating every possible path and choosing the best, but this takes too long, so current algorithms instead choose random points in the environment and determine which ones are reachable from the closest known point while still avoiding collisions. This builds up a map of collision-free paths, but leads to the jerky movements you see in the video above.

The new algorithm takes a different approach. The robot now assumes that each point it evaluates is surrounded by a sphere of open space, so the points within this space can be ignored. As the robot builds its map and encounters potential collisions it shrinks or expands these spheres to match, creating an overlapping volume of clear space that it can move through naturally and freely to grab a hot mug of its favourite beverage.

Article Marketing Versus Ppc Marketing For Your Online Income ...

Internet marketers who have been online for a number of years will generally utilize both pay per click and article marketing among the many other methods of advertising they use for their internet based businesses.

As a beginner choosing between article marketing and pay per click (PPC) the benefits of article marketing far outweigh the risks involved in PPC marketing for your online income based business.

These are some of the differences between the two forms of advertising that can help you decide which will be of greater benefit for your online business.

One very big advantage that article marketing has over pay per click, especially for a beginner is that even at the lowest level you can still benefit a start getting traffic even if it is only a little bit each month. Getting a trickle of leads at no cost definitely beats the risk of spending hundreds of dollars experimenting and getting no results from a PPC campaign.

Even if you write and publish an article that is a complete flop and attract no traffic, all you will have lost is possibly and hour or two of your time. Especially if you published it manually on some free article directories, you will not have wasted any money and there is still the benefit of having built a few back-links to your website.

]]>

In comparison, if you set up a PPC campaign that bombed, you would find yourself several hundred dollars out of pocket with nothing at all to show for your work. Therefore the risk involved in article marketing is considerably less than that in pay per click marketing.

One of the best benefits of article marketing is that once you have published an article on a few article directories you can pretty much just forget about it and let it do its own work. It makes no difference whether you have just a few articles or thousands of articles published, you never need to do anything with these articles again, they will still continue to bring targeted traffic to your website on a regular basis.

If you compare this with pay per click marketing, although it will bring traffic to your online income business much more quickly, you will need to keep monitoring and tracking each campaign and it will only work as long as you are paying for the advertising. Any paid advertising such as pay per click will stop the minute you stop paying for it.

Pay per click is usually a faster and more efficient method of getting targeted traffic to your website but this can quickly be balanced out by being prolific and diligent in publishing article and here are a few points to prove this to you. For example let?s assume that you are getting 1000 click throughs a week for your various pay per click campaigns and your bill is about a week.

For the purpose of this exercise let us say that you get approximately 5 click throughs a week from each article that you have published on any one of the article directories you use. In order to obtain the same number of clicks from your articles as you get from your PPC campaign you would need to have published 200 articles. (200 x 5 clicks per week = 1,000 leads)

So now you need to ask yourself how long it would take for you to publish 200 articles?

Just choose five of the leading article directories to publish your articles on and then publish each of the articles that you write on all five directories. You only have to write 40 articles to get to your target of 200.

So if you can be consistent and write just four articles a week, within ten weeks of your article marketing campaign you will have 200 articles generating quality targeted traffic to your website and if you seriously want to build a successful online income business without spending a great deal of money on advertising, this method will bring you traffic on a regular basis for many years to come.
