He may play ?mind games,? such as suggesting that you?re hypersensitive, hysterical, or mentally unbalanced. He may isolate you from your family, friends, and colleagues. Abuse may also take the form of pathological jealousy, such as false accusations. Soon, you may find yourself cut off from all outside connections, no longer in touch with the people and services that could help you.

This isolation may disconnect you from a sense of what?s normal. You may not even think of yourself as a victim of domestic violence. After an incident, the abuser often apologizes. There may be periods of relative calm.

KNOW THE WARNING SIGNS OF ABUSE

There are tell tale signs, often early in the relationship. According to the National Network to End Domestic Violence, survivors of domestic violence frequently report that their instincts told them there was something wrong early on but they disregarded the warning signs and didn?t know that these signs were indicative of an abusive relationship.

Below are some of the early warning signs told by women who have been abused:

• Wants to move too quickly into the relationship
• Does not honor your boundaries
• Is excessively jealous and accuses you of having affairs

Always take time to get to know a potential partner and watch for patterns of behavior in a variety of settings.? US official: Al-Qaida's No. 2 killed in Pakistan

Born in Libya, al-Rahman joined bin Laden as a teenager in Afghanistan to fight the Soviet Union.

It recovered within an hour and stayed higher the rest of the day.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 134.72 points, or 1.2 percent, to close at 11,284.54. It was up 4.3 percent for the week after being down the past four.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 17.53, or 1.5 percent, to 1,176.80. It rose 4.7 percent for the week, its biggest gain since the week ended July 1. The technology-heavy Nasdaq composite index rose 60.22, or 2.5 percent, to 2,479.85.

Other analysts said Bernanke's speech helped lift investor sentiment. Liz Ann Sonders, chief investment strategist at Charles Schwab, said Bernanke's speech was an "acknowledgement that the Fed is not out of tools and that they stand ready" to act if needed.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) ? A Russian space station supply ship crashed with a thunderous boom into Siberia minutes after launch Wednesday, rattling NASA and others in this new era without any shuttles to bail out the orbiting outpost.

The rocket failed barely a month after NASA's final space shuttle flight.

While the International Space Station has more than enough supplies, the accident threatens to delay the launch of the next crew, just one month away. That's because the upper stage of the unmanned Soyuz rocket that failed is similar to the ones used to launch astronauts to the station.

In addition, three of the six space station residents who are due to return to Earth in two weeks might end up staying longer. NASA wants a full staff to keep research going. The astronauts were just beginning to spend more time on scientific experiments, now that the station is complete.

The Soyuz rocket soared right on time from Kazakhstan, and everything seemed to be going perfectly until just over five minutes into the flight. The third-stage ignited, but the rocket commanded the engine to shut down because of a problem, said NASA's space station program manager, Mike Suffredini.

All contact with the spacecraft was lost. Russian space officials declared it a total failure after reports of wreckage falling with a deafening roar in a remote area of Siberia.

"The explosion was so strong that for 100 kilometers (60 miles) glass almost flew out of the windows," Alexander Borisov, head of the Choisky region in Russia's Altai province, was quoted by state news agency RIA Novosti as saying.

Shuttle Atlantis' final mission in July left the space station with a year's worth of provisions.

Without the shuttles, NASA now is counting on Russia, Europe and Japan, as well as private U.S. businesses, to keep the station stocked. The Russians had 3 tons of supplies aboard the Progress ship that was destroyed. And it's the Russians who will be transporting astronauts back and forth until U.S. private industry can pick up the human load.

NASA and its international partners want to keep the space station running until at least 2020.

Their Soyuz capsule for the ride home, which they launched in, is docked to the space station and can remain safely in orbit for up to seven months. That's the length of the longest U.S. space mission to date. The world endurance record ? well over a year ? belongs to a Russian.

Suffredini acknowledged it would be nice to have the space shuttles still flying as a backup measure, but they wouldn't be rushing to launch one anyway, Suffredini said.

"Logistically, we're in really good shape," he said three hours after the accident.

"We've always known this was a risk, and I very much expect that we'll, together with our Russian colleagues, sort out the anomaly and get comfortable with the next flight."

Suffredini was in his office at Johnson Space Center in Houston, awaiting email confirmation that the cargo ship safely had reached orbit. That message never came. Instead, "phones started ringing and emails started pouring in" saying something had gone wrong, he said.

It was the 44th launch of a Progress supply ship to the space station ? and the first failure in the nearly 13-year life of the complex. The spacemen were notified promptly of the accident; almost assuredly, the lost vessel contained notes and gifts from their wives and children, as well as special treats like fresh food.

Another Russian supply ship is due to launch in late October. A European freighter is scheduled to blast off with supplies in March, and a Japanese one in May. The space station easily could go until then, Suffredini said.

A demonstration flight of the first commercial resupply craft, meanwhile, is due to blast off from Cape Canaveral at the end of November. Space Explorations Technologies Corp., or SpaceX, will have its Dragon capsule dock with the space station; only nonessential cargo will be on board.

There was no one-of-a-kind equipment aboard the destroyed Progress, Suffredini said. More than half the load was water, oxygen and fuel.

Suffredini said it's unfortunate the space shuttles retired before these commercial cargo runs were in full swing. But given the limited amount of money available, the decision was made for NASA to concentrate on the next step in exploration ? trips by astronauts to an asteroid and Mars.

That's why one extra resupply mission by Atlantis was added before the shuttle program ended, Suffredini noted, just in case of launch failures or delays.

A process called electrowetting could provide 10 watts of juice to smartphones and other gadgets as you walk

Forget to charge your phone? Your MP3 player? Soon, a quick stroll in a special pair of shoes could provide enough power to keep both going for hours.

There's a lot of 'oomph' in a step: up to 10 watts of power is lost as heat each time a foot hits the ground. Mobile devices such as phones and laptops use between 1 and 15 watts, so harnessing our 'foot power' would make a notable difference for consumers. So far, however, attempts to harvest this energy using vibrating plates or piezoelectric materials, which produce electricity when compressed or bent, have mustered only a few milliwatts.

Using as their basis a system published today in Nature Communications, mechanical engineers Tom Krupenkin and Ashley Taylor at the University of Wisconsin in Madison are now developing 'in-shoe technology' that could generate up to 10 watts of power per footstep.

Krupenkin's inspiration is a technique called electrowetting, in which a conductive liquid droplet, placed on an electrode, is physically deformed by an applied electric charge. The technique depends on the use of a dielectric material ? which is usually an insulator but that can be polarized in an electric field ? to coat the electrode. When the dielectric is charged the droplet can wet the surface more easily, and deforms. In his system, Krupenkin runs this process backwards, using the changing physical form of liquid drops between dielectric-coated plates to generate charge and therefore electrical power.

To test his idea, Krupenkin placed patches of electrodes coated very thinly with the dielectric tantalum oxide along tiny channels a few millimetres wide. Using a resistor to convert electrical charge to alternating current, Krupenkin was able to harvest electrical energy from drops of either mercury or galinstan, a gallium-based alloy as they were moved along these channels and over the electrodes.

"If you run a motor in reverse you get an electrical generator," says Krupenkin, explaining that this is the same idea.

"Usually in electrowetting we apply voltage to move things. Here it is the other way round," says Frieder Mugele, an expert in electrowetting from the University of Twente, the Netherlands, who was not involved with the work. "I would have liked to have had this idea myself," he concedes.

The amount of power generated increased in proportion to the number of droplets used. So far, Krupenkin has got up to 150 droplets, which produced a few milliwatts of power. But he has extrapolated his experimental data and calculated that in a device with 1,000 droplets, which would easily fit into an area of 40 centimetres squared, up to 10 watts could be generated.

Neil White, an electronics expert at the University of Southampton, UK, says it will be impressive if the scaled-up device really can produce 10 watts, adding: "I haven't seen anything like this before." White remains cautious, though, and would like to see more work looking at whether some of those 10 watts might be coming from the piezoelectric properties of the tantalum oxide, rather than from its interaction with the droplets.Ten watts would be enough to power a mobile phone, a military radio, a GPS device, even a small laptop, Krupenkin says. Which could mean an end to curtailed conversations on a phone with a dying battery. In your feet, you would have "a mobile electronic unit with you that is always ready", says Krupenkin. He hopes a device like this could be useful in developing countries, where electricity isn't always as plentiful or accessible as it is in more industrialized parts of the world.

Krupenkin has patented his idea and is now concentrating on scaling up the device and designing a shoe to contain it.

• Laffing Matterz at the Broward Center continues in the Abdo New River Room Thursdays and Fridays at 7:30 p.m., Saturdays at 8:30 p.m. and selected Sundays throughout the season at 4:30 p.m. Enjoy free belly laughs with every delicious dinner as couples, friends, co-workers, families and groups can once again join together laughing at the absurdities of marriage, South Florida scandals, national politics, current events and everything in between?as a cast of multi-talented performers presents hilarious satire with all original songs while you dine on award-winning fare.? • The Broward Center 2011-2012 Pride Series presents America?s favorite dragapella beauty shop quartet The Kinsey Sicks in Oy Vey in a Manger on Saturday, December 3 at 6 and 9 p.m. in the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.? Combining a cappella singing, over-the-top drag and plenty of Jewish angst, the Kinsey Sicks turns its considerable talents to the global effort to stamp out holiday cheer.? A cross between Capitol Steps and Sex in the City, the performance will feature holiday parodies such as ?Harried Little Christmas,? ?Jews Better Watch Out,? ?Macaroona,?? ?God Bless Ye Femmy Lesbians,? ?A Lay in a Manger,? ?Papirossen? and the new Christmas cuisine standard, ?Soylent Night.?? ?This production contains adult language and subject matter.? • Sunday Brunch at the Broward Center and the SunTrust Sunday Jazz Brunch take place Sunday, December 4 from 10:30 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. Listen to the soulful sounds of jazz while enjoying an amazing spread that includes pancakes, waffles, Eggs Benedict with all the trimmings, a full carving station, shrimp and fresh catch of the day, pastries, fruits, yogurts and more. Enjoy it all in the beautiful Broward Center Peck Courtyard while listening to the best in free jazz along the Riverwalk.? Brunch service is offered from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Einstein Room and Peck Courtyard for $25 per person, including tax and your choice of a refreshing Bloody Mary or Mimosa.? • The Broward Center 2011-2012 Classical Series presents the New York Pops under the baton of musical director and conductor Steven Reineke in A Swingin? Christmas on Thursday, December 8 at 7:30 p.m. in the Au-Rene Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in a concert generously underwritten by Rosemarie and Gary Wendt.? The largest independent symphonic pops orchestra in the country makes its Broward Center debut with special guest artists John Pizzarelli and Jessica Molaskey, who have been described by The New York Times as ?a musical match made in heaven.? The jazz power couple and New York City?s top musicians swing seasonal favorites from the era when Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole and Rosemary Clooney ruled the airwaves.? • The Broward Center for the Performing Arts and the Performance Project production of A Christmas Carol comes to the Amaturo Theater of the Broward Center Friday, December 9 through Sunday, December 11. The antics of Scrooge as he rediscovers the joy of Christmas Day combined with music, dance and awe-inspiring effects accompanying the arrivals of ghosts have made stage adaptations of Charles Dickens? classic the first theater-going experience for thousands of children and an annual family favorite.

This high-energy production starring DJ Lance Rock, Brobee, Foofa, Muno, Plex and Toodee features an energetic mix of music, animation, games, singing and dancing.? The Songs of Kander and Ebb on Wednesday, December 14 through Sunday, December 18 at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center.? Honored in 1998 with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Kennedy Center Honors, composer John Kander and Fred Ebb wrote such Broadway blockbusters as Cabaret, Kiss of the Spider Woman, Zorba, and the longest running revival in Broadway history, Chicago. This is a presentation in the Melodies & Memories Series, spirited celebrations of America?s greatest songs from Tin Pan Alley, Broadway and Hollywood, conceived and directed by Barry Levitt, former Artistic Director of New York?s 92nd Street Y?s smash Lyrics and Lyricists Series.? • The Broward Center presents the Smart Stage Matinee presentation of Hispanico Ballet Flamenco, a colorful cross-section of traditional Latin American music and dance performed live by talented international artists on Thursday, December 15 at 10 and 11:30 a.m. at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center.The performances feature the Mexican jarabe-tapatio, the Colombian cumbia, the Argentine tango and malambo, Caribbean salsa and merengue, the rhythmic bombos and the spectacular magic of boleadores that demonstrate how these musical traditions have been influenced by history, politics and cultural psychology.? • The holiday classic Miracle on 34th Street takes the Au-Rene Theater stage on Saturday, December 17 at 8 p.m. at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. In a story faithful to the film, Kris Kringle, aka Santa Claus, goes on trial, Macy?s becomes the friendly store to shop, two lost souls find each other and a little girl discovers her childhood through her belief in miracles.? • Bank of America Broadway Across America-Ft. Lauderdale and Florida Theatrical Association in partnership with the Broward Center for the Performing Arts present Cirque Dreams Holidaze from Tuesday, December 27 through Sunday, January 1 in the Au-Rene Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. Created and directed by Neil Goldberg, Cirque Dreams Holidaze is an original new musical extravaganza filled with spectacle, imagination and whimsical dreams. Ornaments come to life as costumed characters perform astonishing feats that celebrate the holiday season and showcase pageantry, ingenuity and breathtaking artistry. An international cast of acrobats, aerialists, singers, dancers and musicians fill this Cirque Dream on stage, in the air and while dangling from a 24-foot tall magical tree in a show that includes gingerbread men flipping through the air, toy soldiers skillfully marching on thin wires, snowmen daringly balancing, icemen sculpting powerfully, penguins spinning, puppets caroling and reindeer soaring high above a landscape of holiday wonderment.?
