HAMMOND, Ind. ? Purdue University Calumet announced the hiring of Leslie Ferguson as the head coach of the university?s inaugural women?s soccer program during a press conference on Wednesday, February 1. The Peregrines will begin play with a full varsity schedule this fall.
?Leslie took over a mediocre program at Waubonsee where she improved every year,? said interim athletic director John Friend. ?She was a conference champion, regional champion and took her team to the 2011 NJCAA National Tournament. Leslie was also an outstanding player at Judson in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference and will be a great fit with our athletic program.?
Ferguson comes to Purdue Calumet after a successful eight-year stint at Waubonsee Community College, where she led the Chiefs to an 87-66-8 mark, three Region IV titles, two Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference championships as well as a NJCAA National Tournament appearance in 2011. She has accrued a 64-21-4 record over the past four years, earning Coach-of-the-Year accolades from the ISCC on two occasions and one from the NJCAA Region IV.
Ferguson guided one of the region?s top offenses in 2011, as the Chiefs broke seven school records and outscored their opponents 23-1 during a four-match run through the playoffs to the NJCAA National Tournament. She has coached 41 First Team All-ISCC performers, 18 First Team All-Region IV selections, three NJCAA All-Americans and two ISCC and Region IV Player of the Year honorees.
Prior to her coaching career, Ferguson was a four-year letterwinner at Judson University, where she was a two-time NAIA Honorable Mention All-American, All-CCAC and all-region performer.
The Purdue Calumet women?s soccer program will compete as an independent NAIA institution during the 2012 campaign, before joining the CCAC schedule in 2013. The addition of women?s soccer is part of the latest installment of Purdue Calumet?s athletic expansion plan, as the athletic department currently sponsors 10 intercollegiate sport programs and will jump to 12 with the planned addition of baseball and softball for the 2013-14 campaign.
The Huntley, Ill. native received an undergraduate degree in sports management and a physical education certificate from Judson University. She has also served as a coach and trainer for the Bartlett Soccer Travel Club, Heat United Soccer Club and Panther Soccer Travel Club.
