Perfect Form Fitness LLC, 38 Andover Street, recently introduced Booty Barre classes, a combination of dance, pilates, yoga, balance on a barre (bar) and mat work to improve strength, mobility and coordination.
Owner Dana Gattinella said two years ago, she trained with Booty Barre founder and celebrity trainer Tracey Mallett?who has been seen on Ellen and Access Hollywood. Gattinella emphasized the rigorous certification requirements, and explained they are one of the few fitness facilities in Massachusetts certified to teach the class.
Perfect Form Fitness, in business for over 10 years, is a personal training studio with small group classes in Stott Pilates, TRX suspension, in addition to Booty Barre.
Gattinella said she began teaching fitness classes as a teenager before getting her degree in Health Education at the University of Massachusetts. Initially, she worked in rehab training and did personal training on the side. Deciding that she didn?t enjoy the clinical side, she did corporate group and personal training in her home, and later for the former Andover Training Station, now Yang's Fitness and Wellness Center.
Although the studio does not have weight or aerobic machines, Gattinella explained clients use their own bodies as resistance. TRX?uses a suspension strap that hangs from above which clients can use to push and pull, making their body their fitness machine. It also includes jump rope and other props to improve total body strength. Stott Pilates uses the mat with props or Reformer apparatus and props.
Gattinella said her studio is perfect for clients who want guidance and motivation. Though predominantly women, there are a lot of men, and a mix of ages from 20-70. Some of her clients are post rehab; between physical therapy and resuming active sports.
All classes are limited in size and that limit varies. She said the classes are also divided into levels, and a person who is at the basic level would not be allowed to do an intermediate class. Gattinella compares her classes to group personal training, only more affordable. Clients can also share personal training sessions with another person.
?Our emphasis is on preventing injuries,? she explained. She has a staff of four trainers including her, and they are all personal trainers and certified. She emphasized they are not rep counters, but work with individuals to improve posture, which is crucial to all exercise.?
?Perfect form is all about technique, and I see that as the major difference between our classes and other gyms,? she explained.
Her trainers are also moms who understand the craziness of juggling work, family and eating healthy. ?They are a nice fit for the community, and I am lucky to find people who love what they do,? she said.
Each of them has her niche, she explained. ?I deal a lot with injuries and older clients, while Pam is good working with clients who want to be pushed.?
While classes are divided into 6-8 week sessions, drop-ins are allowed on a reservation basis. Signing up for a session guarantees a spot and is less money. Punch cards and multiple class discounts are available.
While class participants come and go, Gattinella said many of her personal training clients have become her friends.
She explained that her longest client has been with her for 19 years, and she has seen her kids grow up, get married and have kids. ?
Summing it up, she said, ?I love what I do.?
Classes are held from between 6:15am to 6:45 pm Monday through Saturday and change depending on demand.?Personal training is by appointment.
The next session begins October 29. Information about the studio, class descriptions and schedules is on the website. The phone number is ?978-474-0474.
