The Ventura County Sheriff and Fire Department, Ventura Harbor Patrol, Environmental Health, the US Coast Guard and US Customs are taking turns investigating an abandoned boat on the shore of La Conchita today. Authorities received a call about the Panga boat at 8am this morning.Authorities say smuggling boats are commonly used to arrive in California, because of the open coastline. Half of the cases involve drugs and half involve human smuggling. There is no official statement at this time, but we are told this boat likely carried human cargo - judging by the life vests and items found in the boat.
The boat arrived on shore during the night. To escape detection, the owners painted it in dull paint and placed a wet sleeping bag over the engine. A transient saw the boat at five this morning but said all occupants had already fled.
