Regulator grants rate increases
by Catherine Sudue SYRACUSE (NCC NEWS) ? According to the Department of Financial Services (DFS), health insurance premiums will ?increase once again. Insurance companies are regulated by DFS. This means that if a company decides to increase a person?s health insurance premium, they must submit a request known as prior approval to the department and notify their insured members. Some requests were granted.
Holistic practice as an alternative
?If you are someone in good health- which I generally am- I was putting thousands of dollars into insurance every year and not using it,? Jini Cerio said. ?It was one of the things that got cancelled when the economy got bad.?
Cerio is the owner of Markowitz Florists and is a certified holistic and spiritual healer. She cancelled her insurance policy four years ago after paying almost $400 per month in premiums.
She added that terminating her plan with Blue Cross Blue Shield was one of the best things she could have done since she?s been able to explore essential peppermint oil as a remedy for headaches or castor oil as exterior treatment to her feet and knees.
?Affordable Care Act
According to President Barack Obama?s official website, by instilling the Affordable Care Act, he hopes to reduce the cost of health insurance. Broker and owner of Fiscal Fitness, Clark Gronsbell believes that health insurance is a necessity and should be used as a safety net.
?I kind of equate it to your home insurance. You have insurance on your house if it catches on fire. Not if a baseball goes through the window,? Gronsbell said.
Insurance for people in New York will increase as early as October. Individuals will need to check with their employers, third party administrator or health insurance company for rates.
